Symphony Radio - Local Stations Problem

Featured Replies

I drive from Manchester to Liverpool on a daily basis and like to listen to Radio Merseyside.

On my old Felicia, with the "local" option selected on the radio, this was no problem. The signal is adequate at the Manchester end, obviously improving as I get nearer Liverpool.

In my recently purchased Fabia, the radio consistently retunes itself to a stronger signal (actually Radio Manchester - not my station of choice ;-), even changing the setting of the preset to be this station (so I can't even easily flick back).

I have made sure that "Auto Reg" is activated but this makes no difference.

Is this a faulty radio or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance...

Its how the radio works - mine does the same regardless of the settings, if the signal weakens, it will switch to the station with stronger signal even though its preset. For example, I have Radio Nottingham pre set to freq. 95.5 MHz, if I travel between Notts and Derbys border, it weakens and automatically flicks over to Radio Derby which is something like 104 MHz, and remains as the preset station until you manually retune it.

Radio Merseyside also broadcasts on 1485 KHz AM, (Medium Wave Band) so if you like to listen to it, try tuning the AM band of your radio to that frequency - it won't flick over automatically. However downside is, it is more prone to atmospheric conditions, interference etc due to being analogue AM.

If you turn auto reg off I would expect that the Radio will stay on your chosen station rather than choose a stronger BBC Local.

It works for me. I have always thought the REG facility on RDS was to make the tuner select the strongest station as you move into a different region.

I did turn auto-reg off and at first thought it had helped but now it seems not.

I can't believe the radio is meant to work like this. There must be a setting to allow me to stop the radio retuning itself.

I suspect this is a fault and will be taking it up with the garage.

Mine does the same with auto reg off so thinking it not really a fault, have noticed the BBC station on 103.8MHz doesn't retune itself at all, therefore if Radio Merseyside has a higher frequency band like Nottingham which is on 95.5 and 103.8, try tuning it to the higher band.

It doesn't unfortunately.

It really is ridiculous, even on the outskrts of Liverpool it wanders off to Radio Lancashire...

I have the same problem with my radio which has been replaced once - still the same. Does anyone have the problem of the audio cutting out for a fraction of a second on the radio only, CD works ok? Very intermittent - sometimes once a journey, other times every few seconds, also happened with both of the radios.

Get a signal booster fitted, you can get them from around £8 at halfords.

I have not suffered the cutting out problem.

No progress with the retuning issue, my dealer reset the radio, that was great. That left me with a radio that still wouldn't stay tuned to the station I wanted but with all my other settings lost.

I've given up on it to be honest. :thumbdwn:

Hi

Dunno if this has been asked before. Does the radio do this on both AM and FM or FM only?

If FM only does it happen to multiple stations or just one.

I'm wondering if your Radio is switching because the station you are listening to has several frequencies and it's trying to find the best.

This could be determined by noting the frequency when starting the journey. Push the manual button to reveal this. Then when the radio cuts for a second push manual and see what the frequency is then.

One of the routes I regularly travel is quite good for this as the best reception changes through 3 different transmitters over 3 miles and the radio hunts for the best.

In my case it's FM and it changes to completely different stations, e.g. Radios Merseyside, Manchester & Lancashire tend to feature.

My old Skoda radio had a similar feature but you could select "Local" which turned this annoying functionality off.

Turning it off on this model is either not an option or doesn't work.
