FMIC over the Standard small mount. Is it worth it???

Featured Replies

Basically your views on a FMIC over the standard SMIC.

Really are the gains worth the ££

As universal intercoolers can show lttle or no improvement, ie, longer hoses?

Has the forge one been calculated, pressure drops? temp? hose lengths etc

Was in my mates worshop yesturday and was looking at a Nova.

Was a 2.0 turbo, and the intercooler was tiny about half the size of the Fabia's. Just shows is bigger better

So in reality I think improving the airflow to the OEM SMIC and possibly upgrading the hoses and fittings, to prevent leaks etc... would be more suitable.

IMO front mounts are more to do with asthetics and arent really worth the hassle unless going over 200bhp+

Any ideas or facts?????

Intercooler size is based on flow and more importantly BOOST. If you have a 1/2 bar boost going into a petrol engine, that's not heating the inlet air appreciably compared to a TDI pushing 1.5bar.

IMO it's not particularly worth fitting an FMIC with the standard turbo. Part of the reason for that being that the standard unit is relatively flimsy when it comes to upping the performance.

I'd argue that it's more about the way you want to use the car than ultimate power goals though. High speed runs and tracking it, FMIC will be more worth it.

If you want a reliable 190bhp+ then, YES

If you want to have a standard car, or a mild tune to say 165bhp, then NO.

Hope that helps. :)

Yeah I saw that link soon after I posted it. The standard hoses and couplings seem a bit loose on mine. Will look into some roose hoses or some better fixings. Anyone else had any problems with the engine cover rubbing on the plastic hose that runs over the top of the engine?

Worth it with hybrid turbo, otherwise just vent the SMIC to allow it to work properly instead (wheel arch vent)

The couplings are crud for higher boost but unless you get unlucky will hold the boost fine. I ran 2bar without a problem - however due to engine swap etc the clip gave up on me. Use new clips and it will be just fine :)
