Weird rev counter....

Featured Replies

Hey folks... a few days ago, i bought a dashboard cluster off ebay and fitted it as my fuel guage wasn't working properly and the temperature guage had gone dicky and also rev counter not working properly.

So changed it over, everything working fine expect rev counter still not working properly... would only show 4,500 rpm or zero depending of engine revs.

So today while driving down to Burnley... got into the town and noticed the rev counter reading about 600rpm while stationary.. so i revved it slightly and noticed it was working fully as it should... so i thought great!!!

Left car for an hour or two and then when i drove it again it was back to its normal self (just reading 4,500 when engine revving) until about half way home when it suddenly kicked down to about 3,000 rpm while doing around 70 and worked fine all the way home again.

Will nip to car soon and see if its gone back to not working.... very weird though...

Sounds like something weird is going on with the pickup sensor for the rev counter.

what he said. fix it.

Just been out and its back to its normal self... reading nothing.. then jumps up to 4,500 rpm once revving a fair bit.

Very weird... where does the signal come from for the rev counter... as far as i knew the ECU gets the signal from the flywheel sensor and then passes a signal (via a yellow wire) to the rev counter.

Could it just be a break in the cable to the rev counter?

Could i bodge this do you reckon guys??

The rev counter is obviously working... and the ECU obviously know how fast the engine is turning... and theres a proper signal coming through... sometimes.

Maybe i could run a wire from the ecu to the rev counter directly... clip it onto the wire that comes out of the ECU and then onto the wire that feeds into the back of the head unit.

What are your thoughts???

worth a try i suppose

at the risk of spoiling your fun, dont do it! it will end in tears:O

i reckon it's more ikely to be a dodgey guage or the voltage regulator has gone

well.. the thing is... both the guage and the entire dash pod are new.... so it cant be that surely!?
