Possible low speed impact damage

Featured Replies

Say an Octy II gets hit form behind at about 10mph, there is a bit of a bang and there are a few bruises, scratches and pitting on the rear bumper + bumper strip and maybe a couple of broken plastic tabs off somewhere...

What damage could have happened potentially that should be checked out?

prolly not much except you might need a new bumper to replace bits that have broke off. i reversed into a post at around 5mph and luckily no damage was done so you will prolly be ok if itwas only10mph but im no expert

just make sure and have a good look around, rear bumper bar and places and make sure the boot mat still fits perfectly flat on the boot floor

The damage which completely totalled the metro that hit you?

I would remove / refit the bumper (and do any spraying work needed inbetween) and you should be OK. The metal bumper bar I doubt will have even slightly deformed at that speed. It wouldn't probably even deform at a speed which would put the back bumper totally out of use. :)

So, in my mind, remove bumper, repair any surface damage, refit. And get the money for the repair work off the muppet which hit you? (assuming they were doing 10mph and you 0, and not them doing 0mph, and you doing 10mph in reverse :P ;))

Might as well get the suspension/wheel to arch gaps checked. If you had your brakes on when hit, then there may have been some shifting that needs adjusting back again. Any good repair center should check this as a matter of course.

Unless you have any sort of loyalty to the offending rear ender then don't do or touch a thing and have it examined/repaired properly.

I have no loyalty and the car is going into a repair centre however having had a hit and run earlier this year I'd rather not be going through the insurance.

The car that hit me was a lease car for a taxi firm who have their own body shop. They have offered to sort it all there FOC to me.

I checked with a torch and couldn't see any deformation in the boot floor or from under the car, however I'm going to get an opinion from a local body shop that I trust first.

I would want them to be paying for a skoda repair so that it gives you peace of mind. (I've been in the same situation a few years ago with my old saab and regretted enforcing a visit to an saab repair centre).

Don't touch their own bodyshop with a bargepole.

Get details of their insurance company and make a claim direct.

Yep as Alex says deal direct - It's a non fault.

Taxi firms are notorious people to deal with, they screw insurance companies for everything possible if they are hit.

Sorry I should clarify, the body shop belongs to a car leasing company and is fully insurance approved. Some of the company car drivers actually use it for their repair.

Said leasing company is also the drivers insurance company and I have confirmed that fact.

I guess the problem I have is that the car leasing company, who also own the body shop are also the insurance providers for him.

What a pita

Hi,

The bottom line is it is your car. You can choose who repairs it. You don't even need to use your own insurers repair centre (I did that after a rear end shunt in my first Octy and they screwed it up such that it was never fixed properly).

I would tell them you are claiming through your own insurance and pick a body shop of your own choice.

Regards

Have you seen what is behind your rear bumper I had a towbar fitted to my Mk11 octy and was amazed what was there

check under the bumper and inside the boot area, was hit years ago and even through the bumper looked fine, the actual damage when inspected resulted in the boot area being body shopped so i could get the tyre out and open and close boot as a couple of examples that had been damaged.

Oh dont forget the whiplash ;)

As Stu suggests IMO

Mine was alow speed impact, around 10mph, then 5 days later the engine drops off a mount due to a claimed twisted chassis. Whether the mount was coincidential or related, i dont know still, and i still dont know whether the chassis was twisted or not.

Get the car checked, ASAP!!

Mine had no apparent damage other than the dent in the bumper... :(
