Annoying buzz from door speaker

Featured Replies

Well where do I start with this one?

I have a new Octy II vRS TDi which has had various rattles and buzzes from day one. It's been into the garage more times than I care to count and I just picked it up from its latest visit.

On this occasion, the technican from the garage came out with me for a test run to make sure everything was hunky dory, which it was... until a buzz that had been annoying me started coming from the drivers door speaker.

It only buzzes at particular frequencies on the stereo but can be cured simply by placing your hand on it.

Trouble is, I'd be too embarrassed to take it back to the garage after agreeing with the tech that everything was now ok. It's the only thing left that's annoying me now, is there anything I can do myself to cure the problem? Advice much appreciated!

Really sorry to bump this thread but it's depressing when it's the only one that hasn't had a single reply after so long!

The only thing I can think of is to tighten the door panel somehow but I don't know where to start. Anyone got any advice or ideas?

Hope this helps a little..... Might be worth checking speaker mounting, then drive the car with door card removed etc etc. See if buzz disappears.

Thanks, that's a great help. I'll get round to taking the door cards / panels off this weekend coming and have a good look then.

Anyone else had problems of this sort i.e. buzzing / rattling from the door panels and what you did to cure the problem?

Is it the door card vibrating?

If so get some dynamat or dynamat extreme and stick it on the plastic bit of door card by the speaker such that it isn't in the way of anything.

This will add to the mass so make the resonant frequency of the door card lower. You just need to add sufficient mass to make it vibrate at a frequency you won't get out of the speaker.

What exactly is the door card? Basically it's just the plastic panelling that's vibrating at certain frequencies but stops when you put your hand on it. Hardly any pressure is needed to stop the buzzing so I'm guessing that a bit of padding will stop it completely.

The tech told me at the garage that they don't soundproof car doors anymore and instead there's just a metal frame between the outer skin and the interior cabin. This is borne out by the pictures posted on the link here.

Shall have to go and find some of this dynamat stuff - is it just soundproofing material like they used to pad doors and other other panelling out with?

Don't be embarrassed this is just a fixed fault returning - I would not start taking a new car to bits to fix a fault covered by warranty, if you damage anything they will not fix it under warranty and you could be stacking up your problems.

Take it back and get it fixed properly

Thanks for the moral support but the problem is I don't think they will ever fix it properly. The car's been in more times than I can remember since I bought it in September but this problem has persisted.

The tech who came out with me last time said it was the best they could do and that there wasn't anything left to try. Even if I did take the car back in I have no confidence whatsoever that it would come out any better than when I took it in. Maybe I should try a different garage?

I've had mine in once already to fix a vibrating front passenger door speaker when the volume is pushed up a bit. All the other doors are fine.

Neadless to say it came out of the dealer exactly the same way it went in but I haven't had the time to take it back.

I have the same issue on my front passenger door. I'm hoping I can fix it with a little adhesive backed foam wedged between the touching components, or a bit of dynamat or brown bread stuffed in there.

@scottpcs, had they that particular door card off the last time it was in? If so maybe it wasn't put back on 100%. I had an issue with my Passangers side one before, so they left one of the clips off, it got rid of the first noise but introduced another. When they looked at it again they put all the clips on and has been okay since. My noise was to the dash side of the door opening handle.

I'd bring it back if I was you, as yoiu may break something. Least if you know where its coming from you can point it out, maybe something just ain't seated properly.

Your right though, the Mk2 is like a kids rattler :(

The tech should not be working in this line of work if 'thats the best tehy can do'.

Saves them time and money as you will just go away.

If this is a new car, stick to your guns and demand the car be done.

Thanks, I may just do that. It is a new car (and not a cheap one at that which makes it even more annoying!)

It's a false economy to tell your customer what they want to hear though as they'll only keep coming back with the same problem!

I'll ring them this week then to re-book it in for the umpteenth time

Might be worth buying a dynamat roll and asking the garage to apply it while they have the door card off anyway.

This assumes you have a helpful dealer of course.

Let us know how you get on and good luck mate.

I had my vRS couple of weeks back to get the drivers door window sorted out , i watched the mechanic take the door card off . . . not a job i would try to attempt . I noticed on mine that the speaker itself is riveted into place not screwed in .
