Removing the Tailgate "lining"

Featured Replies

I saw a recent thread on this for the Mk1 Octy, but I just wondered if there were any hints or tips for doing it on the Mk2.

My next door neighbour ran into the car yesterday on her chicken chaser and left a dent in the tailgate. The paint has not cracked so I was going to remove the liner and see if it could be pushed out. It's only around 4" across, I tried the old Hairdryer / air duster trick with no luck.

If I can pop it out I will just slap a sticker over it to hide any minor ripple that's left.

I think I have seen something on here for the Mk2 as well.

Looking at the pic I may have to ride round with a dented boot for a bit :(

MMMM! Same thing happened to me. I removed the tailgate lining to remove a dent in the side of the numberplate recess. For starters I made a pigs ear of trying to push the dent out. I made it worse and split the paint. I'ts only a small dent but it ****ed me off.

Putting the lining back is not as straight forward as it seems. You have to put the top in first, making sure to align the sides to slot into the joints. You will know what I mean. The clips are a bloody nightmare if they are not lined up perfectly. They will bend, pop out and then you lose the things on the floor.

Take care and dont try to rush it. Thats my advice. Better still take it to a dent repairer and let him do the thing. £80 well spent

Tony do you have any luck with cars, exploding coil packs, dents etc

Looks pretty much the same as the mk1 it is do-able but can be a frustrating lining back up as harry says

The mk2 is way easier IMHO :) Line up the holes near the lock (but don't engage) then push in the ones near the windows. Don't bang them of they will break.

Just done this on my estate. Don't forget to remove the recessed torq screw that holds the pull down strap before trying to remove the cover. I found that the amount of force required to remove the panel was frightening and almost gave up! Use a well padded rounded off screwdriver blade to insert between the body and cover. I started with the clips by the lock as they were the tightest. I also put some grease on each metal clip before replacing the panel - this might make it easier in future. Replacement is a lot easier with two people.

I needed to get the top cover off (the one that surrounds the window) because of rattles and realised that this won't come off until the main cover is removed. In addition there are two screws holding the top cover on that can't be accessed until the main cover is removed.
