1.9 Diesel fuel pump

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 1.9 diesel estate which earlier this week refused to start, I've taken it to my usual mechanic and he says it's the fuel pump, he's quoted me £273 for a new one plus fitting, VAT etc bringing to total close to £600, ouch.

So I'm trying to find a second hand one but they seem to be as rare as rocking horse poo. Anyone got any idea's where I may be able to find one ? I'm probably going to try one of those web sites that searches lots of breakers yards, but thought I'd just try here first.

Thanks,

Phill.

Oh yeah, it's a late 98 model, with an engine number ending in AEF, my mechanic tells me it's manually operated and not fly-by-wire (as fitted to some golfs with the same engine).

May be displaying my ignorance here, but what with diesels not having a throttle, wouldn't any diesel with electronic fuel injection be fly-by-wire?

I'm no expert, just going on what the mechanic said, he definately said it's a manual throttle cable and not fly by wire, I don't know if fly-by-wire was ever fitted to any of the Felicias, I'm sure someone here will though !

Philj...Dont do anything crazy here.

Diesel Fuel Injection pumps are VERY robust units and seldom conk out as yours has..

Usually a DP will give some form of warning,a creeping paralysis almost which should give an owner time to contemplate robbing their nearest co-op.

Get down n dirty and check, even visually, the Fuel Filters and pipework, even have a prod around the Fuel Tank filler cap for breathing restrictions and then look closely at the Glowplug system....even if it still turns out to be a duff pump, the diesel experience will make a man of you..... :)

no, to be honest the diesel ecu doesn't actually do an awefull lot really,it mainly controls a few solenoids on the injection pump. the pump is indeed operated by a cable on the felicia and they were never fitted with drive-by-wire

I've since spoken with my mechanic and the price he quoted is to have my injection pump sent off and refurbished and returned, I trust him to have checked all the usual things first as he has a good reputation and has always been very thorougher in the work he's done for me in past.

I'm also pretty sure it's not the glow plugs as it would start from cold straight off then die after a 5 - 10 seconds running. Then when I did get the engine running it would speed up and slow down on it's own accord. in fact thinking about this there's been times in the past where the revs have stayed high after lifting off the accelerator and clutch at the same time (like when changing down a gear when approaching a junction), but would be Ok when sliping the clutch in again, I put this down to sticky cable but maybe this was an early warning sign.

AFAIK the Felicias have never been fitted with a "by wire"

I'm fairly sure They all have a cable going from the pedal to the engine bay.

My mechanics van (A 1998 R reg Transit with 2.5l TD) has a noisy diesel pump which he says is like a mini engine. Belt driven supplying fuel to the engine. Yeah they are fairly expensive new as he said Ford quoted him £500/£600 for a new pump.

Sounds maybe like air getting into the fuel system. I would have thought that if the injector pump was to fault, she wouldn't start as easily as you describe.

When I change the fuel filter on my 1.9D, she starts easily enough but then runs unevenly and conks out when she sucks in the air from where I haven't been able to fill the new filter all the way to the top with fuel.

Maybe change the fuel filter and check all fuel system connections before parting with lots of cash on a new pump?

When I first described the problem to my mechanic he also thought it was air getting into the system, I'm not sure why he's changed his mind, I may give him a call later today or try and get a second opinion somewhere.

sounds like the fast idle system playing up in the injection pump

I've bitten the bullet and given the Mechanic the go ahead to get the injection pump refurbished, I won't get the car back until early next week, but hopefully then it'll all be sorted.

Thanks to everyone for you help and comments.

(wondering how I'm going to pay for all this)

please let us know the problem is fixed.i have a skpda 1.9 diesel which wont start.i tried spraying carb cleaner straight into the intake and she started but then cut out.i tried opening the injector connector as i gave her starter but there was almost no pressure.i'm thinking that means the pump is bad.any input?

There are two different pumps on a diesel, the fuel supply pump in the tank and the injector pump (the expensive one). If you're not getting fuel TO the injector pump, it could either be a blocked fuel filter or the supply pump at fault.

why not rig up a temp fuel system , just a plastic bottle will do , hang from bonnet ,using clear pipe you can be sure of no contamination / air / lift pump failure, many of the "dud" oil burners that come in to the scrap yard are victims of the above. blockages and air are the worst offenders.

Hmmm,Interesting...Does anybody have a fuel flow diagram for the 1.9 Diesel ?

It would seem from this thread that there is a submersible lift pump fitted in the tank..Electric presumably...Can anybody confirm/deny this ??
