Audio help

Featured Replies

Hi everyone as I'm an IT super geek I have decided to fit a small PC into my car, Fabia vRS 07 - not an SE. I have the PC itself & all the power issues sorted etc however I'm having trouble with the screen, I know what your thinking mis-titled thread but bear with me here, I originally wanted a screen that would fold down in to a 1 din unit so I could slide it under the standard stereo & use one of those car2pc devices to provide the sound out through the cars current setup, this is all still the standard by the way. The idea behind this was to keep it as stock looking as possible so that the little b******s wont try & steal it all first time its parked up.

However non of the fold away screens are plain enough on the front so I have decided to look into putting in just a normal 7" or 8" touchscreen. To do this I have to take out the standard stereo as the screen will just about fit in the double din area left, I can then set it back a bit & make up a front panel that will fit over it looking like a normally dash for when its parked up.

So finally on to the thread title what would I need to then get my PC to use the cars strandard audio setup. Can I just tap straight into the ISO harness to power the speakers in the car or do I need to go via an amp? If this is the case can anyone suggest a good quality amp thats not to expensive, as I'm tone deaf I find the current speakers fine so I'm not looking at replacing them at this time.

Thanks for all help/advice in advance.

easiest way is to buy a FM transmitter. it will send out the audio for you to tune the radio into.

dead easy and they are cheap so if you upgrade the headunit to one with a aux input you havent spend much cash on it :)

how did you put together teh pc itself? im thinking about that for my car. ive got a old Mobo lying somewhere as a starting block. where did you get the screen from?

It seems a bit of a waste to have a PC that could play high quality lossless recordings, and then use it through a rubbish quality fm transmitter type thing.

What I'd do is make sure the PC had a good sound card with line outs, then buy a small amplifier to run the speakers.

You can get amps for well under £100 that will do the job nicely.

Hi thanks the the quick reply, that was one of my first thoughts until my brain went - but ain't you taking the radio out to fit the screen in the dash? - doh!

I started looking at all my old bits of PC kit but it worked out just to big for my little car so I ended up with this lot: -

LinITX.com - LinITX VoomPC-2 2.0Ghz CarPC Bundle

The screen will be: -

LinITX.com - LinITX 8" Widescreen VGA/Composite Monitor with Touchscreen

The plan is to the take the front panel off the screen & get a spare radio surround from the dealer, fiber glass the two together & hopefully have something that looks factory fitted.

So something like this would do the job: -

Page Not Responding - This page is worng by the way

Asking a stupid question though would the normal speaks just plug into this via an ISO extions lead to the boot or would I need to put all new wiring in to the speakers?

You will have to forgive some of these questions know my way aorund a PC in the dark, car wiring bit more tricky as its expensive to play on one & get it wrong. :-)

sorry didnt see the bit about removing the HU.

if your going to use a seperate amp, then you would need to simply extend the wires from the dash to where the amp is going to be situated. running new wires would mean trying to thread them through the doors and involve taking off lots of trim.

as your using the factory speakers you should be able to find a nice small amp that just outputs a similar wattage, otherwise if you go too powerful a amp you risk having to buy better speakers sooner

No worries I did same thing when I first though up the idea. Yeah want to be avoiding to much of a strip down just for a couple of wires.

So I got something like this: -

Maplin > 2 Channel Power Amplifier 2 x 100W

Maplin > High Power Amplifier Wiring Kit Power Amplifier Wiring Kit

All I would have to do is to take the ISO connector left in the car & extend it to the amp & plug the speakers into the outsputs.

Now I have that sorted would a 2 channel amp do it as I would only want left & right or would a 4 channel be better for the full fr, fl, rr & lr setup?

Your best bet is to have a look over on Talkaudio and search around there for amp advice etc.

Maplins are not the best place to buy audio bits from ;)

If you want some help installing etc, I don't mind helping as I am in NW Leicester :)

Cheers I'll look else where for it.

I may well take you up on that offer as I've just been out to car to have noise around & it does look easier with to pairs of hands instead of one.

i would go 4 channel, just to keep it OEM ;)

the rear speakers do add to the overall sound quality and its a shame to loose them

Yeah thats what I was thinking but I wasn't sure. Once I get my head round the stuff I will be fine but that learning curves a bit steep. :-)
