Starts then cuts out

Featured Replies

I have an N plate 1.3GLXi which due to a shoulder operation was left on the garden for 4 weeks:thumbdwn: starting just once. This morning tried to start, aarrgh flat battery:mad:. Charged up the battery and tried again it started:thumbup: then stopped:confused:, try again foot flat to floor it revved :thumbup:then cut out again. No matter what position the throttle is in it will not idle,:confused::confused::confused:

i own a 1.3 n reg glxi an mines doin same thing atm. must not like the weather ay lol :(

First I'd clean the distributor cap inside & out and wipe the plug leads too. DON'T remove the leads unless you know exactly where they came off. Clean the rotor arm too - DON'T try and remove it, they're stuck on. Then spray inside & out with WD40, replace dizzy cap, reconnect plug leads and go from there :)

Does it start and immediately cut out? It could be the immobilizer causing it to cut out - I had this problem with the 1.6 when I got a key cut and hadn't go it mapped to the ECU. It did the same as what you are describing.

are you sure about the rotor arm? Mine exploded the other week had to go to Motorsave for a new one, but the other stuff has been tried today any other ideas

The rotar arms are removeable - sometimes with a bit of brute force. They are a pain, on both the 1.3 and 1.6

Have not a clue if it has an immobilizer its a 1.3 GLXi on a N reg, it fires up then just dies slowly an sounds like its got no air filter in. It does have an air filter fitted!

Glad you added that bit, thought sometimes brute force is not a good thing

I believe all Felicia's had them since 1995 - the Favorit used to have a separate key, with the Felicia they incorporated this.

I m not 100% sure what else I can advise you if its the immobilizer - if there were no problems with it before then it is ok, unless it lost the identification of the key when the battery went flat. Have you tried a different key?

I would try as other people have said as well, check the distributor cap etc, and clean ignition system up as a whole, and see if it goes then.

HTH a bit

YOU STAR!!!!!!! I was trying to start it with the spare:eek: so I could lock it up with the engine running to charge the battery. On further investigation the main key has a chip inside and guess what it starts the car:thumbup: The next question is how do I get a chip for the spare. CHEERS AGAIN BUD:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Being an old system I would guess a high street key cutters like timpsons would either be able to do it or at least know where to go to to get it done.

any chance of a pic for the keys internals?

Not much to see will try and take one, but it just looks like a small black oblong just above where the key comes into the cover. Opened mine gently with a small screwdriver its not glued and just clips back together

Nice one :) Pleased to hear you got it sorted!

My garage sorted my spare for £5 on my last car. he isn't a dealer but has all of the Skoda VAG COM etc. So he mapped the key to the car, in a few minutes. Two working keys, and problem solved

I have the spare key complete with all the metal tags they come with new, but the spare has no chip in to reprogram. The car has just done 55,ooo miles do you think they would do it under warranty:rofl:

If you still have a warranty with a garage / dealer you bought it from then give it a go. I don't think they would charge too much for it otherwise. It might be worth looking into and see how much it will be. Least you know what the problem is the next time you try the other key :)

If you have the tags, do you just have to take the keys in?

Unfortunatly I bought it private off a little old dear who had it from new but no power steering meant she couldnt drive it any more, so I dont think itll still have Skoda warranty

Your guess is as good as mine:confused: Any ideas anyone

Apparently not :( I think the keys themselves are static and it's the ECU/Immobiliser that needs to be reset... (just got that from Teflon Tom and a Skoda dealer).

VAGcom job.
