More Octavia woes...

Featured Replies

As some of you know my car was damaged during an accident with a Subaru..

I have been suffering since I got the car back, with a wheel bearing type noise, this only becomes noticably if the car driven on a right hand corner

at speeds above 40mph.. The front offside wheel bearing was replaced ( in the accident ). The rear wheel bearings have been replaced when the new rear axle was replaced. So the only other possibilities is either the near side front bearing ( this took the impact of the Subaru hitting ) or the front diff has been damaged due to the shock of both impacts... I'm getting fed up of my car comming back from the dealer with 'its normal or bring it back if it gets worse, or I must be imagining it!' This type of answer was given when my rear axle was completely out...

I also got what I think is excessive wind noise around the pillars between the front and rear doors and around the rear of the car... I've driven a few

Fabia's as loan cars and these are almost silent in comparison.. Do others find this?

Also I'm still getting the variable volume out of the standard Skoda stereo..

where even running the stereo at 'normal volume' it will vary the volume depending on the amount of bass its trying to produce... ( there is no audible

distortion ).. I've had 3 x stereos in 2 of these are 'repaired' units.. All of these units have had the same problem,( they turn themselves down and then vary from that ) most of them have had additional issues as well. ( unable to turn off the Gala function, etc ). I've contacted Skoda CS .. who has informed me that Skoda stereo's have a loudness protection system to stop the driver listenening to loud music.. A STEREO WITH A CONCIENCE!!!

thats a first!!.. The stereo does get very warm,, so the Electronics training in me thinks that the speakers conbined are offering an excessive load on the amp, thus over loading it. So I ask the CS rep and my dealer if there could be a fault with the speakers or wiring... No because the ECU would record such a fault...?

Also while I was cleaning the car before comming down to Brunters I noticed the drivers door internal panel was filthy ( the sliver cloth bit.. ) I'm 99% sure I have not done it as I don't where dirty overalls in the car.. but it would have had when it was getting repaired. the drivers seat is still clean but they put covers over it to protect them...

Not happy.. As its preventling me from enjoying my car... Maybe time for a dealer change?

But I think I really need to drive ( or be driven in another vRS ) to check out the wheel bearing noise and the wind noise....

Well after 3 phone calls to Skoda CS and my dealer with no response..

I contacted the dealer again to 'have a go',,, basically Skoda UK wanted the dealer to send the stereo away for repair a 3rd time.. the dealer has refused and is ordering a new replacement..

The other issues,, bearing noise and wind noise are.. well my imagination..

If the bearing noise is me imagining it why does it only do it on one side and I've had two different makes of tyre on...

The wind noise... is noticeable.. My SWMBO N plate Mondeo is quieter!!!

I want another standard Octavia vRS / or similar L&K to drive in for 10 minutes, I will then be able to instantly tell if there is something wrong with mine....!!!

Frustrated is an understatement..... Also its getting increasing difficult to

praise Skoda and its cars/service!!!!

Sorry to hear all this mate :(

If you can make your way to Aylesbury, then be my guest. You have until the 14th of May :)

Dazz, its a shame you didnt spot these b4 brunters. Plenty of octys were around for you to drive.

I drive both the octy and a 10 yr old mondy, I find the mondeo is much quieter at speed than the octy. I sometimes think I can hear wind noise from the passenger rear. It could be the noise is coming from both sides, but sitting in the drivers seat it will seem more pronounced from one side than the other. Whats the car like with someone else driving whilst you sit in the passenger seat.

If it wasnt like this before the mishap then it cant be your imagination, or perhaps it was but now you have noticed it.

These where there pre Brunters... The thing is I was waiting on my dealer

contacting me about the stereo and the bearing noise...

Also I went out with one of the Fabia vRS boys in grp C and even though I had a helmet on it seemed very refined even though it was being driven

very quickly...

Also I've driven quite a few Fabia's as dealer loan cars, while mine has been in for servicing, and other work.. I usually have to keep it for a few days as I work in Leeds...

I drove 3 Octavia vRS on test drives and don't remember this level of wind noise... By the way my dealer has previously 'adjusted the drivers door'

to cut down on the noise...

Thanks all for your comments/offers but I need to drive a newish totally standard Octavia..... The dealer SHOULD be able to acheive that!!...

I don't trust the technical expertise of my dealer as they told me my car handled ok, even with the tracking way out and a bent rear axle..

Cheers

Dazz..

Well I'm very P***ed off today...!!!! I went in to my dealer on Saturday..

The usual Service Manager was not there .. His stand in gets one of the

Tech's to go out in my car.. He is out 5 mins.. comes in and tells me he has heard a wheel bearing type noise, but he say's it was difficult to pinpoint,

as he is only allowed to drive around 'the block', and what is needed is for me to take the service manager out to demostrate the problem. Also my excessive wind noise will be compared against a brand new Octy vRS sitting in the showroom, which I will drive.. Excellent... I'm told that I will be contacted on Tuesday to arrange booking my car in for this comparison drive and the other work.

Tuesday comes and go's.. Wed afternoon I get a call from Skoda CS rep..

( I'd opened a case re- the stereo issues ).. He tell's me the Stereo will

be replaced with a brand new unit and my retailer will be contacting me

later that day..

Thursday morning still no call from dealer.. Skoda CS rep rings me.. and asks if I i'm still ok taking my car in this next Saturday... I say. I don't know as dealer has not rang me. CS rep promises to get dealer to ring me..

I get a call from dealer.. My stereo is not to be replaced, the dealer needs a demo of the problem! ( AGAIN!! ). The Tech say's that its NOT a wheel bearing but the tyres!! ( Two sets of different makes on since accident ).

They haven't got the time to go on an extended test drive or do any fault finding because Skoda UK don't pay them to do that!! WTF!!!!

Also he would leave the wheel bearing issue until it became bad enough to notice.. I say I don't want to do that because worn wheel bearings can overheat and collapse!,, his response is a corker.. No wheel bearings don't

do this you will be OK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the same guy who told me that it was my imagination that my car was lurching over to left when I released the steering wheel, and that all Octavia's do that.. Only after me persisting was it discovered that the rear axle was damaged and that the tracking was way out!!!...

So what to do now? I'm going to contact the Skoda CS rep. To lodge a formal compliant against this dealers service department Manager..

And I will be going to another dealer...!!

Take it to another dealer now!

Or at least pop into another one without going into the history for a "checkup"

only round the block? Thats bull. I had an issue on old 4x4 with ARB joints clicking...we had a good 25 mins driving around, the tech that is. Popped it back to them two weeks later (was having it's KW fitted the next day) and they stripped and re did somthing.

I'd ask them in writing for there explanation of the "it's not a wheel bearing" good enough to stand up in court, that will either get a letter or a swift ducking and diving. Either way I would change dealers, but don't tell them just yet ;)

Not sure what the Crewe one is like, but it's only a short blast down the D road, plus there must be plenty of others...Enough notice most lend you a car.

Re the stero...I don't know, short of putting it somewhere unpleasant and demonstrating, I don't think the message would get through even then...It's got to be case for Skoda CS, dare I say it mention the site/dealer bad press / unhappy...it's what we are here for as much as anything.

Colin where are you located?

Cheers everone for the advice...

Nearest dealers to me are ( except for the useless one )

Robert Eardley's in Crewe

and thats about it locally.. Not well represented in Staffordshire..

I do spend all week up in Leeds so there are two possibles

DM Keith in Leeds

or

FR Pulleyn in York..

Will try them....

Dazz,

I use Lea Hall Motors in Rugeley - south Staffs. Bought my car from there and they've done all of my servicing and a couple of warranty jobs. They did the work OK and on time.
