clonk from steering

Featured Replies

I have noticed for the last couple of days that when I have reserved into a parking space, when turning my steering towards full lock (not sure I ever quite get to full though), there is a bit of a clonky noise.

Any chance it might be related to my tyre wear issue?

Any ideas?

Cheers!

Matt

Noises when reversing sometimes suggest issues with the rear calipers IME - but never heard about a 'clunk'...???

This is not the VRS moooing type noise.... and from my hearing seems to be coming from the front near side.... so I guess that maybe I need to have a look down there, but the chances are I can't do that till Friday morning, and 500 miles+ time :-(

I suppose a wheel bearing might be a possibility, if there's a little bit of play, and the steering flex is enough to move the hub from one 'side' of its play to the other (don't know the technical tern, but hopefully you see what I mean). The only other thing I can think of is wear in the CV joints. Sorry if this is an egg-sucking lesson, but you'll need to find an area large enough that you can do a full 360 and drive VERY SLOWLY on full lock with the window open, listing for a regular THUD, THUD, THUD as the bearings move from one side of their play to the other...

This is probably best left to the Rosses, Stus and Toms of this site though, so I hope you get it sorted...
