Thermostats...which colour

Featured Replies

Been running round in a Skoda felicia (1999 V) for about 3 months now...temperature gauge moves just above 70 on my 12 mile motorway trip to work, if I sit in car park for about 10 mins idling it starts to rise...fan does kick in after about 30 mins idling

Read alot about colour coding...my radiator thermo has a green band...top of engine has a yellow band...anyone know if any are wrong...

Longest trip so far Wakefield to Blackpool...no problems but gauge still didn't get much above half way except in que's...

Any help appreciated...thanks

I think if anyone is going to be able to answer this comprehensively, they'd need to know if it's a 1.3 SPi or MPi or the 1.6 MPi engine Baby Inca.

And welcome to BriSkoda. :)

I don't know whether your temperature sensor has two pins (like a Fabia) or four (like an Octavia. The latest-pattern four-pin one is green, and the two-pin one the dealer sold me when replacing the sensor on my wife's car was grey (more here). Not sure about the yellow top of the engine - the housing is brass???

As for whether just doing the sensor is enough, most people in-the-know suggest getting the sensor / thermostat body pack, and doing the whole job in a one-er. I don;t think you'll be able to get that anywhere other than a dealer, but it'll allow you to 'kill two birds with one stone', so could save time and effort (and money) in the long run!

Check under the oil cap for signs of white mist and oil mixing in the coolant which may mean that the head gasket is fuxxored.

What Felicia have you got?

Mine goes to halfway when the engines been running and on my 15 mile trek to work. It's not gone beyond halfway except when in stop start traffic around town.

My 1.6 overheated once when the fan didn't kick in. Needed a new thermostat and fan switch.

As long as the fan is kicking in and the engine isn't overheating you prob don't need to worry. But it might be worth keeping an eye on your coolant.

*edit* AFAIK for the 1.6 version dealers will sell the Thermostat in a new sender housing and not just on its' own.

On my 1.3 spi i used to have a sensor on the thermostat housing that had a yellow band on... since getting a new thermostat and sensor it is now blue and works fine.

I have a brand new sensor with blue ring going spare and cheap if anyone is ineterested.

To me your symptoms are familiar and suggest a faulty thermostat, nothing else. Search the Felicia forum for posts on thermostats, there's a lot of them.

Good advice is to change both the thermostat and the idiotic plastic stat housing which often breaks.

Or find an SPi engine & nick the ally housing!

:iagree:

I had this problem when I first got my car. I would say it was the thermostat, the complete housing needs to be replaced as the plastic clip inside breaks and renders the thermostat useless. They cost just under £50 from a skoda dealer. Definetly worth changing especially in this cold weather. My car is fully heated up within 5-10mins of driving, it's fantastic.

I think I have a spare thermostat around somewhere but it's for the alloy housing on the earliest felicias. Might be good for a favorit as well. I have no idea where it is at the minute though!
