What the heck is the noise!

Featured Replies

okay when im out in my Octavia, i get this weird noise from about 30- 40 mph onwards, i guess i could describe it as a whine but as you go faster it increases in pitch, im pretty certain its coming from the rear, but i cant figure it out?

Assuming it's not the turbo ( ;) ), then it might be a wheel bearing...

Tyre noise would be my guess if it is a dull drumming type noise rather than a bearing type rumble.

its def not the turbo, as its definately coming from behind and i know what the turbo whistle sounds like but its not really thrummy, higher pitched than that, but not as high pitched as turbo whistle!, leaning towards tyre noise actually, but they still have a fair bit of tread and im too broke to change them out.

I started to get an odd noise from the rear when the tyres started to wear below 2mm.

A few long shots: aerodynamic noise seeing as it's related to speed or something stuck in one of the rear discs.

Failing that, wheel bearing.

I would say rear tyres. I had the same problem.

Can you tell use how many miles your car has done?

What tyres do you have make/model and how much tread left? - this seems to be the favourite possibilty.

Isn't the rear geometry more a vRS problem or is it across the board?

Finally, bit of a long shot - are your rear windows fully/properly shut? One of them hasn't crept open a mm or two by any chance?

It's across the range -

This information applies to Standard, Sport and Rough road suspension.

When I first got my car I thought the wheel bearing noise would

be no more.

Tyre noise was about the same as the wheel bearing noise

without the danger of seizure :)

thanks all for the suggestions, im going to have to take it back to the dealer i bought it off i guess, problem is its around an hour and a half away!!

okay so it could be:

Bearing

Tyres

Alignment

Wind noise from seal

Brakes

lol crikey is there anything it couldnt be!

Not so much as wind noise from a seal - just a slightly open window.

Have you got roof bars fitted? When ever I put mine on, they start to make funny noises at the speeds you mention.
