Cutting the engine cover?

Featured Replies

Has anyone cut their engine cover when changing to a taller diverter valve etc...?

I was tempted to do mine but don't really like the thought of screwing it up. Was tempted just to cut the top right hand side off on top of the diverter valve, which may even keep it that little bit cooler as well?

Did it to mine to avoid the S3 strut brace and stop the Forge 007 from rubbing:) Now both of my VRS`s run without the covers in place

See, I was tempted to run it without the cover but my cover seems to get fairly dusty and i'd much rather the cover get dirty then everything on my engine!

Have you got any pics of the s3 you cut? :)

Sorry i think you think i have an S3:confused: No my VRS has a s3 strut brace on it and the engine cover used to rub so i cut a small bit out..... Then the top vac hose rubbed through so i lost the dv, hence cover removal to resolve all probs

I cut a slot in my engine cover when I fitted the Forge 007P DV.

Awesome said it would fit........ but it did'nt :thumbdwn:

All I did, was rub chalk on the top side of the vacuum pipe then secure the engine cover in position. Then when the cover was removed I could see the position of the slot I needed to cut.

I used a 1/2" hole cutter to make two holes (one at either end of the slot) and cut out the centre with a hacksaw blade.

The vacuum pipe is now higher than the top face of the engine cover by approx 3/8"

Does it look a bit... crap though? :D

Any pics?

Looks better than not having the engine cover fitted.....which would have been the only other option

I used the right tools, took my time and did a neat job of it, but would agree it looked better std ;)

If you get some time i'd be interested to see some pics!

You're right though, i'd rather run with the engine cover then without.

Sorry mate, our computor wont seem to do picks at the moment (bloody kids again, I bet )

I could sent you a mobile phone picture, if that helps ???

Yea, could do actually if thats cool?! :)

Just want to see what it could look like. I'll PM you my number.

What does your machine do if you try and view a pic? I might be able to help.

Thanks for the pics mate, I think it looks pretty smart!

Mind if I post them for anyone that's interested?

Sent you some pictures, hope they are OK, if not let me know and I'll take some more.

Thanks for the kind offer to help me sort my computor, It's about 7 years old and is very very slow, and it just locks up altogether if I try to add pic's etc

We think it might be best to "bin it" and get a new one in the january sales.

Not such a bad idea, you can pick up some decent spec machines with 17/19" monitors for £299+ nowadays!

:)

They are great thanks.

For anyone else who's interested (i've seen a few threads about this);

My vacuum hose (Forge 007) only rubbed very slightly on the top cover ,so fitted tye-wrap round hose at highest point just before bend to protect hose, cover fits back perfectly without cutting holes.

Why don't you all just mount the dv the other way round like mine. It should fit nice and snug. See here http://www.forgemotorsport.co.uk/valve.pdf

The only difference is a very slight noise increase which ain't all bad

Some Forge employees actually recommend fitting this way round.

Pictures in above link show fitted the correct way round???

Long term I dont think its wise to fit a 007P DV valve the wrong way round if the car has been remapped and running higher boost pressures.

The piston is sealed with an "O ring" recessed into the valve body which is perfectly OK for a DV fitted the correct way round. Because under boost conditions both sides off the "O ring" are subject to similar boost pressures, therefor no boost leak past the "O ring".

When the valve is fitted the wrong way round boost pressure is present at only one side of the "O ring" which potentially could allow boost pressure to leak past the "O ring" into the turbo intake pipe.

The only way to get around this would be to replace the "O ring" with a proper directional seal  or you could just fit it the right way round :D

Dunno about that but forge do state on their fitting guide here http://www.forgemotorsport.co.uk/valve.pdf :

Although the valve can be fitted

in either orientation, I would

suggest that you fit it, THE

SAME WAY ROUND AS THE

ORIGINAL BOSCH VALVE.

Recent tests have proven this

gives a far quieter operation.

I know a few cupra boys are running it fitted this way with no probs although some say the Dv chirps a bit, mine sounds great

I had mine on the wrong way round for about 5 miles coulddnt stand the noise it kinda screechs.

Sounds effin awful.....imho

Mines a FMDV006 which by the look of the servicing instructions is different:

"The DV007 differs from the DV006 in that the top is threaded onto the body of the valve

rather than bolted and the “O” rings are within the lower body rather than the top half of the

valve."

This maybe why the sound is different.

Anyway sorry to hijack the thread. Better get thoughs saws out again :D

There used to be a good link on here about dump valves but cant seem to find it. Anyway it said that if fitted the correct way the boost pressure helped keep valve closed and if reversed boost pressure could actually force valve to open and dump boost (when you dont it want to)
