Upgrading from 1.9SDI to 1.9TDI VRS

Ok so 18 months or so on from vrs ownership and I'm still delighted with the car. Performance wise it's had 312mm brakes, cupra console bushes and a rear anti roll bar fitted since I purchased it. I have also leather seat retrimmed it at The Seat Surgeons, and fitted an aux-in socket. The 312mm brakes and rear anti roll bar are in my view the two best value-for-money upgrades if you're going to take the vrs on track or drive it quickly where conditions allow on the normal roads. I took mine on track last Friday and it was simply brilliant fun!

I drove my brothers' 1.9SDI fabia this morning and really began to once again appreciate the power hike I got when I started driving the vrs. The vrs had started to feel a bit slow and "normal" to me recently but having driven the SDI and got back in the vrs, the vrs feels fast again. Driving a slower car for a few minutes is cheaper than a remap! :D.

your tale sounds familiar, i went from a 65bhp 1.5 dci clio to a vrs furb a year ago, and never look back.

my '06 black magic is the best car i've driven and have found out a few things along the way:

1) wet roundabouts are not your friend

2) the seats are a bugger to keep clean

3) strangers will ask what you drive, you say ' a skoda fabia, they say 'VRS?' you say 'aye' they say 'they are mental' ; if this happens, smile knowingly!!

4) the on switch by your right knee will boggle you for ages

5) you can drive like a T**T and still get 45 to the gallon,

enjoy it.

4) You do know this switches on the coolant/heater for the little cubby hole by your knee, don't you? ;)

Just a couple of comparisons between the two regarding motorway behaviour.

I don't know if it has something to do with the width of the tyres, but in my previous car, the 1.9SDI classic, you always used to be able to feel the wind off lorries pushing you away from them. In the VRS, when you go past a lorry on the motorway you don't feel a thing.

The car feels so much more stable and safe on the motorway...

This makes little sense to me considering they are really exactly the same car... :D

Had mine just a touch under a year now. Know exactly what you mean about the motorway and it's behaviour! I had a 1.4 elegance before the vRS. I think it's the stiffer shocks, iron out the dips much more successfully as well as the wider, lower profile tyres.

I'm just getting to the "hmmmm, remap, Hmmmmmmmm" point with mine ;)

Hi again, If you do want a remap but non insurance affecting how about one like Ben & Jabbasport has, he has remapped his own VRS to give 130bhp right across the rev range. Sounds interesting to me.

I think that any map which alters the power delivery of the car should be declared to the insurance, to be honest! But I was very tempted indeed by that map.

If you come along to Hullavington (see incentive in my sig ;)) you'll see that it's perfectly possible to have loads of fun in a vrs without a 'map anyway! I'm happy for the time being :)

When I want a more powerful car I think I might just buy a better car... but I am set to keep the fabia for a good 3 or 4 more years yet.

You are right of course.

Trying to get 31st off work. Waiting for my boss to decide.:banghead:

Well I hope they are as good as everyone says cos I pick my 'new' VRS SE tomorrow :D:D:D

Brentacre dropped my insurane £600 from last year! Im 23 now. And paying £570 or something.

Enjoy the vRS power, but you will get bord, as I have, and then spend your life savings on big turbos and FMICs etc.

Dave

I've only had my vrs a few weeks now. Re-mapped it within 3 days. Came from an Almera Gti. Impressed with the car very smooth and very fast! However I don't think I really appreciate the power as much as I should. Another thing what revs do people take the car up to when booting it?

Insurance for me personally on the 328 is horrid, although oddly it is less than the Fabia :D

I think it is something to do with it being a 4 door version - if it was the coupé I bet I couldn't even get a quote on it. As it stands it is "just a family car" ;)

  • 2 weeks later...
