I need to make something like a endoscope. I guess I need a small thin camera (bullet camera?) and a small light to go with it that I can feed into wall/ceiling cavities to take a look. Anyone done something similar? Got any ideas?

Should have said, it'll probably be plugged into a computer to view.

Needs to be cheap too otherwise I may as well rip them all out and start from scratch.

If you have a busted lap-top, the lids often have mini-web-cams in the lids, no lights though. If you know a friendly plumber, they often have this kind of kit for checking drains (wash it well before use!!) or a hire-centre or "spy-shop" may have stuff to rent.

Tough DIY challenge I would think.

You could use some LEDs for the light source these could be incorporated into the case and run off the 12V supply (with suitable series resistors).
