Sachs or Helix clutch

Featured Replies

Right clutch is knackered and slipping like a polar bear on an icerink.

I have two options a Sachs clutch or a Helix clutch

My car is running a star performance remap, so im assuming around 180bhp and 300lb of torque,

I want something that is going to be able to cope with this for a good few years (basically as long as the car is on the road) i do like to give my cars a fair bashing.

Will the sachs one suffice or would i be better to go full measure and get the Helix one, dont want to be in the same postition in a years time and be kicking myself?

what you guys think?

No contest.....................................................SACHS all the way. But then i would say that as i work for them ;) and have tested them out on my allard tuned ibiza fr tdi before i wrote it off.

are the Helix ones not rated for more torque??

Basically i do hash cars about and is the sachs going to be upto the job?

it will cope with 180 bhp all day long matey. I had a full stage 3 spec allard conversion, which got driven to within an inch of its life daily and was also up santa pod on many occasions. Not once did i have clutch slip.

Yes the helix ones are rated higher possibly, but with the helix, if you go for the full kit you need to go for a SMF if i recall correctly.

yeah i heard that too about a SMF! bit noisier too, the sachs would be ideal, price wise and if it can cope great.

My stepdad says i should get a Helix one and then i know i can give it the beans, suppose i would feel safer with it too!

see what the mechanic says, he is into rallying and knows the WRC skoda boys, so might end up with a Group N clutch for much cheapness

The Sachs organic is rated to 350lb/ft, and that's believed to be fairly conservative figure anyway. It tends to be the torque that will kill a clutch in a remapped diesel, not out and out BHP.

I have one combined with a Jabba custom map and I'm very pleased with it. Day-to-day driveability is hardly affected at all and the clutch pedal retains a lot of the OEM feel, albeit with a slightly higher biting point. You get used to it in no time...

It cost me £580 fitted; a GB price combined with Jabba fitting before my custom map was applied.

Yes - you do need a SMF with the Helix setup. I retained a stock DMF with my Sachs setup. I personally thought the SMF route a bit too extreme, for day-to-day driving with the added harshness and vibration.

£580 fitted :-o thats a good price, i got mine for £250 from work then about another £200 for fitting at JBS :ashamed:

hmm £580 aint a bad price, i dare say i could get it a slight bit cheaper than that..

will phone mechanic tomorrow and see what he says. good lad and knows his stuff. Goes all round the world as a mechanic in the WRC, can change a WRC gearbox in 7 minutes (think) so im in good hands, i'll let him get what he thinks as he knows how i drive.

1.2 corsa - hole in radiator from a bit of offroading

306 hdi - sump smashed, brake caliper snapped.

lol

vrs - new clutch

i wonder when they will invent a car that will stand up to my abuse

Yeah, I thought it was a good deal. A £400 GB price and then fitting at Jabba.

Thing is my stock DMF may be fubar as the clutch seemed as if it had given up the ghost in a major way

If you can get a fitted Sachs organic for less, I'm sure there would be plenty of people interested :)

Other setups maybe - but I wanted something good quality, that would reliably stand up to remapped performance, while maintaining standard driveability. It perhaps the last bit that you'll find hard to find :)

DMF = £89+VAT :D

im pretty sure i could get it fitted for less, you boys go to jabba etc and pay top dollar, whereas i go to a self employed mechanic who knows his stuff and i mean really knows his stuff.

Might not even get either i will just ask him to find me a suitable clutch, he will probaly say helix i guess

hmm thats okay :)

Try and find a sach clutch for less than £450 with out fittin, i think you wont be able to

/\ i was talking about the £580 fitted price, suppose i'll report back tommorrow with what im going for.

I dare say it will be helix, so the potential for FMIC uprated turbo etc is there in the future

spaniels /\ above got his for £250 from his work, i will get a discount of the book price if i go for a sachs i can guarantee it

I wouldn't say Jabba were top dollar at all, that's saved for the dealers. Personally, I find them extremely good value for the services and expertise they offer.

But to each their own....

in some cases the dealers or stealers should i say aint bad!

how much do jabba charge per hour lets say?

£50/£60 thats the going rate isnt it?

Sounds the right ballpark - I think 3-4hrs is quoted for a clutch change, so you're in the right area.

fooking hell!

i pay £25 an hour! for a WRC approved mechanic

Then the WRC mechanic should really charge more! ;)

Surely he should be out working on WRC cars at this time of year anyway? :)

What company/garage does this WRC mechanic work for? Or is it work he does on the side?

He has his own rally car also

the garage is called craigiebank garage
