VRS 2.0 t Engine noise on starting

Featured Replies

My 2.0 tvrs sounds like a bag of spanners on starting. This happens when the ambient temp . is low ( 5.0 c ) and the car has been lying overnight. There is loud knocking from the top end of the engine for a minute or two after starting. There is only 10,000 miles on the engine which runs perfectly othewise. :(

Quite normal and nothing to worry about. The TFSI lump although very good does sound like a tractor on start up! :o

Thank for that . However this is a very heavy knock and is not normal. It sounds like a big end knock but as it seems to be coming from the top end and goes after a couple of minutes I have dismissed this.

probably due to oil draining from the valve train overnight , it will take a while for the hydraulic lifters to refill if the oil is cold on startup. If you immediately shut the car off again and restart the noise should be gone?

Thanks cyborg You could be on to something with this and I will give it a try.

Both Harry Vrs and myself had the same problem, and sorted the same way. It seemed that when the temp fell below about 4 degrees the cam belt pulley was fouling the upper cam cover. Fix required the replacement of both the upper cam belt covers.

I have the same problem with Octy II 1.4MPI.

Glenn1948. Did they change the cam belt also? Thanks

Thanks Glen exactly what is happening to my vrs. I do'nt think the dealer believed me as the engine was warm when they looked at it. I will be contacting them A.S.A.P

Yes, as Glen said this also happened to me. It would only do it when the engine was cold (and ambient temps around 4'C) and it would make a loud ticking sound until the engine had warmed up.

I got a work colleague to follow me to the dealership, we left my car there for the morning and returned late afternoon to show them what the problem was.

I had the problem solved by having both upper cam covers replaced under warranty - I've had no related problems since.

I have the same problem with Octy II 1.4MPI.

Glenn1948. Did they change the cam belt also? Thanks

It occurred to me at the time that the cam belt could have been affected. Got the dealer to check and it showed no sign of wear as it was only the pulley that was fouling.

Thanks for your quick and helpfull answers . I will ask my dealer about this cam belt trouble, but I think that I already know his answer:). Maybe I will ask the same question on Skoda home headquarters .

Thanks Harry vrs. Good to hear how your problem was solved. Its nice to know that that it was nothing more nasty than the belt covers as the noise sounded very expensive.

I'd had my car for 2 days before this started so when I first heard it I was very worried as it does sound expensive doesn't it!

Mine sounds like a 10yr old diesel when the starter turns over and the engine catches. Just the first few seconds, it's fine after that.

Well not fine but normal. The TFSI is hardly an evocative sound from the outside on idle. Can they not engineer a four pot to sound like a 7l V8?
