What is the largest size I could fit onto a stock Felly steel rim?

Featured Replies

Had the brothers felly for the blast up to Acharacle at the weekend, and had a rare old hoot on some serious single traack roads...

However, it seems that the stock rim/tyre combo doesnt really inspire confidence in the cars gripping abilities..

so how wide can I go (yes I'm aware that I should also consider upgrading suspension ARB etc as well!)

omg woodie.... where on earth have you been hiding??

omg woodie.... where on earth have you been hiding??

Thanks for the Concern Tom:D

Been marooned in a Flat with no internet, and a raft of job interviews to study for:thumbup:

Suffice to say, woodie is still rolling along fine (overdue his 5k service now though:eek:)

I would say 185/60s on stock rims. Or do as i did on my fav and go for a set of golf gti 14" steelies

I think I'm right in saying that the Felly hubs are NOT VW ;)

same!

good to hear from you again.

as for the Q, as said 185/60 unless toy can get some 14 or 15's

Cheers Pinkskud:)

60's:eek: wobblemania and poor steering feel ahoy!

I was thinking 185/50's- I'm sure it'd throw the speedo out, but better feel would be worth it...

Suppose they could be banded to take 205's or summat:D:rofl:

offset would be all over the place.

not if the band was put outsider the "centrepoint"

Surely?

plus coilovers with 2.5 inch springs would afford further room to play?

PSYZYGY the felly hubs are the same as vw and the rims i mentioned are the same offset as standard rims , just a bit wider. 185/60s are about the best size option due to price and i had no problems with this set up , not even tramlining

Am I thinking about a different bit of the hubs that VW brakes don't fit on?

Em yes. the offset measurement is taken between the wheel centreline and the clamping/mounting flange.

And I think you might be surprised. I have a mate who once tried to put some Cortina 5 rims on his Escort 2, and decided not to, after realising that the front tyre wall was rubbing on the strut body, below the spring mount.

Cheers for the info:thumbup:

even more to consider:D

the coilover can give you more room, i'm running 7J on mine.

bit i have about 8mm between tire and suspension. but,, no rubbing

I didn't mean that you wouldn't get some extra space; just that the reduction in spring radius itself wasn't going to be much if anything of a factor. I take it the damper body is thinner, and the spring platform a flat plate rather than a cone like the standard part?

Yeah Ken, basically the cone (the bit that rusts;)) will be totally removed, as the GAZ shocks I'd be using would have an adujustable platform welded onto their body.

overall strut diameter would be circa 2.25"

yeah, the hole in the centre of the disc is a different size:thumbup:

I was advocating banding at the edge of the wheel which is to the outside- surely then the distance ftom the back of the wheel to mounting where the bolts go would not change?

therefore, it wouldnt be moved closer to the strut in any way- all the extra width would be on the outside?

thus moving the center line of the rim by half the distance you've added with the band. the offset is the distance between the center line of the wheel, and the mating face. this will give you less offset.

this can have adverse effects on the handling.

:eek::D

cheers! not thinking too much- maybe an inch strip? would mean adding about 25mm to overall wheel width

thats a 12mm change in offset. thats alot i would say.

furry muff:D

more pressing matters at the mo anyway, what with Woodie lunching most all the bits that aint been replaced!
