driving like miss daisy and measly fuel tanks!!

Featured Replies

Morning guys.

Well, after driving like miss daisy to Newcastle from Hull, I've managed to achieve 48mpg on the OBC!

How accurate is the OBC?

and yes i know its not the way to drive the car, but I needed to get here as cheaply as possible lol.

also, 55litre tank!!! whats all that about? LOL

I don't think its perfect but it does give you a rough guide to work with

I think most of the OBCs are optimistic but the only way to really see how it stacks up is to compare it to the brim-to-brim method. You must have been going some (or not!) to get 48mpg though!

Chris

The OBC's a bit optomistic, maybe 10%, in MPG mode. Check the available range mode against the remaining fuel or against a fill up for a better idea.

dont think there as much as 10% out r they?

mine's about 20% out!

 Really? I hope mines not that bad! What does 440 miles from a brimmed tank work out as? My OBC said it was 51.7, that sound right?

depends how many litres your tank holds John.

If it was an Octavia, it'd be 36.6mpg.

I have done 279 miles today, range is 245 miles, OBC says ave mpg 49.3.

lol Chris - I was in no hurry ;) 50-70mph all the way then and back

You sure you haven't bought a diesel by accident?

LOL.

It must be a new fangled one LOL sounds like a petrol, drives like one, goes like one LOL

Em, on the 55l point; 55l is just over 12 gallons, which makes a gently driven (60 to to 70 mph indicated motorway cruising, no holdups) Ambiante TDi capable of over 720 miles on a tankful.

On mine I average between 600 to 650 miles between fill-up's. Which makes the 400-ish miles per tankful on my old Granada look positively greedy, and that had a 15.5 gallon tank (70 litres).

congrats on getting the Octy. When will be we seeing pics ?

yup, computer says about 52 all the time, whereas working it out brim-to-brim comes up with 42ish :(

On my 2000 20V Turbo, for normal day-to-day commuting I get between 29 - 34mpg on the MFA depending on hold-ups and how much right foot I give it. On longer journeys motorway/major A roads, I usually get about 38 - 41mpg. The car is defintely not suited to shorter journeys as far as economy is concerned.

As far as manually working out how many mpg you get from a full tank simply calculate the total miles covered divided this by the tank capacity in litres then mulitply by 4.544. The example below illustrates this calculation -

600 miles from full fuel tank

55 litre fuel tank

600 / 55 * 4.544 = 49.52 miles per gallon.

Cheers

Ian

nope - not tank capacity - it won't be accurate.

only way is to drive untill you need to fill up, fill up till the pump cuts out (and no more!), reset your trip counter, drive untill you need to fill up again, fill up to till the pump cuts out, then take into account the litres used to fill up.

compare with the reading on your trip counter :)

:iagree: - What you need is distance covered divided by fuel burnt, and the only way to get that is mileage between fills and filling to cutout each time.

However, I wouldn't try this on a diesel engine unless you know how to bleed the fuel pump...

Who said anything about draining the tank? If you always fill the tank til the pump cuts out, you get a consistant full level, and know mileage and quantity burnt.

I have he 01-05 vRS and the best Ive done is 45.9 mpg on the dash and I worked it out my self and it only came to 9.54mpl(43.5mpgish) all on the motorway (M62, M6, M5, M32) did no more than 60mph, (I had 7 hr to do 200 mile)

I find that if you take 2 mpg off the dash reading you will have a better reading.
