Does Linux compare with Microsoft Vista in terms of capability ?

- I_'ve got a non-running Ultimate 64 version of the latter (Re-activation problem, OEM version).

compatibility with what exactly?

The best thing to do is download the live cd version of linux that you were thinking about and then if everything runs fine like that then install the os

yeah.. download an ubuntu livecd and see what ya think

Try the live CD of Mandriva, more polished than Ubuntu, if you are going with an Ubuntu distro try Kubuntu, uses KDE desktop, much nicer than Gnome.

aj

I concur, but not with Neo ;) SuSE FTW :D

FTS,,,, SUSE uses KDE and is on the whole not very nice..

Ububtu for sure

Ubuntu's nice. I have a full Linux test in one of my PC Plus magazines

The only issue I had was getting my linksys wireless card working on it.

Haven't tried it with my laptop yet.

Ubuntu is pretty good. I've never got it to work properly with my laptop's wireless setup. So I had to bin it.

Current Vista installation has got to go soon back to XP I think.

Some reported probs with Linux wearing out laptop hard drives early. Not sure if this has been fixed yet.

 where did you read that? Guessing its some FUD being spread around by MS cronies

I haven't used ubuntu properly since Warty,. Maybe its time to buy a second hard drive and pop linux on the laptop.

Once again I can't comment due to my job, however I'd be very careful about what you read and their take on things.

Well I'll be...

that article sounds like it only applies to ubuntu, but one user mentioned its down to the ext3 filesystem, so therefore it affects all 'linux' laptops with the ext3 filesystem (or even a desktop with a heavy power management config.)

I knew there was a reason why I've been using Reiserfs

Cheezemonkhai: you can't make comments like that and leave them like that - lol :D
