Oil Warning

Featured Replies

Hmm...

After a long motorway journey today, as I was nearly home, my oil warning light came on.

Drove home gently at under 2k revs.

Last time i checked the oil, it was lowish but OK, could easy have been 2 months ago TBH. (yeah i know, im a bad man)

Basically im not sure if

a) the sump is damaged (ouch), unlikely though I think

or B) the car has just drunk enough oil for the warning to come on.

On dipstick, the oil is just below the min mark at the mo, ill check again in the morning to see if its dropped, or even gone up as the sump refills.

Assuming its at the same level, so I dont have a leak, do you guys think its safe to drive to the nearest Halfords OR should I get the bus, as it suggests in the manual?

So last time you checked it, it was already low, but you left it anyway? :nono:

Walk / bike / get a lift to Halfords tomorrow and get it filled up.

As i said to someone before, the warning light is a WARNING, not an indication of when to fill up !!!

Yeah, it was at the low end of "OK",

It wasnt onto "FILL ME NOW", and i filed it under "things to do" then forgot.

doh.

Just checked again.

Warning light has gone off, perhaps enough has drained into the sump for it to pass the test, for now...

V low still on the dipstick and too dark to see if my car could be adding oil to the already much stained road :(

Car is parked facing uphill, unavoidale tonight. How much effect would this have on the dipstick reading?

Jono

If the oil warning light is off now, it's probably safe to drive (very carefully) to the nearest Halfords/garage/whatever.

But don't think you're going to be let off lightly :nono:

You check your oil less than once a month? Shame on you! Oil is the lifeblood of your engine. You should be checking it at least every week, and aiming to keep the level just below the "max" mark on the dipstick.

While you're at it, check your tyre pressures, coolant level, and washer level. C'mon, you know it make sense!

Once again I have to agree with Geoff! :(

Yeah well, all sorted now.

I put it down to being sieve brained and I realise now that the car wasnt always level when I checked the oil...

Lesson learnt, and fortunately it wasnt an expensive one.
