"Gone...In 15.989 Seconds" Octy vRS

Featured Replies

Alright Chaps

Was up at Crail today and ran the 1/4 mile four times.

Times Are:

1st Run: 15.989

2nd Run: 16.01

3rd Run: 16.47 (too much wheelspin!)

4th Run: 16.21

The car has a Milltek exhuast and K&N Cone filter. No other mods.

Wot is everyone else achieving?

Anyone find that the front suspension is incredibly underdamped?

Also do the bushs always feel like sponge? Car has jus done 30K miles.

Kenny

What or where is Crail.Private rd or summat? Competed at Kames up your neck of the woods. Very good little circuit, but a long way to go fo about 6 miles of competitive driving

Nice one Kenny

Do you know what speeds you were pulling as you crossed the line?

C.J. Crail is the Scottish Santa Pod on the East coast, about an hour above Edinburgh.

An old airfireld right by the sea thats either freezing cold or boiling hot!

I'm finding my front suspension a bit spongy compared to when it was new, definitely bounces a bit over bumps at high speed, I've done 35k miles (pretty hard). Not bad enough to consider replacing anything yet. What's at Kames ? I drive past it a lot but assumed it was some kind of rally circuit rather than a track. I fancied Crail at the weekend but had to attend a family party, I did have some fun in the Spey Valley at 0800 on Sunday morning though !

Its a little circuit bit south of glasgow.Very narrow and twisty, but good fun. Used for sprints but don't know what else. It was alledgedly the first place that Colin McCrae drove a car competitively. C.J.

Kames is at Muirkirk on the A70, isn't it ?

1st run terminated @ 89.6mph

2nd run @ 89.3

3rd run @ 89.3

4th run @ 89.6

i'll b back up to Crail next month for the Fast Car thrash and hopefully will hav sorted the bouncy suspension.

Will also b visiting Dastek in Fife for a re-map and possibly some laughing gas(N2O)!!! I'm not letting anymore rusty Nova sheds beating me with there 2litre enginess!!!

Anyone tried Spax Suspension on their Octy's?

Kenny

i'll post a pic later of the Nova rusty-shed that beat me!

Spax horrible nasty nasty suspension!

Have a look around this site for information on KWs.

Use the search function in the My Performance section.

Another option is Bilstein.

  • Author

Unfortuinately KW is out of my budget range at the moment.

Is Bilstein the next best option?

I've looked around the site and there isn't much opinion on anything except KW.

See here

lol, sorry, just realised it was you that posted that thread!

Perhaps PM Shugz and ask how he's gettin on with them.

Just a pic of me lining up with the rusty Nova that beat me!!!

I think you are a top dog admitting your deafeat! As you say it musn't happen again..especially by an old albeit quick rusty shed of a :toilet: nova

Got to pacify yourself in the knowledge that the 2litre vauxhall lump is damned good, plus that nova had probably shed half it's weight in rust :D

You'll have sweet revange next time hopefully  C.J.

take comfort in knowing that the bottom end of the 16v vauxhall lump was developed by cosworth, plus the n/a lump is capable of well over 200bhp. in a nova thats the makings of a quick car.

on an after thought, did said nova beat you by much ??

  • Author

The Nova only beat me by about 3 car lengths!

He posted 15.3 secs for that run. i think he has a bog standard untuned 2litre under the bonnet, otherwise he would hav ran even quicker!

If the Octy could shed some weight it would be much quicker! 1375KG is way too heavy!

The Billies are very good, I'd recommend them as the handling is now much sharper and the car has a stiffer/ more 'planted' feel to it.

Cheers

Hugh

Cheers, Hugh - I'm going the same route for the 4x4, good to hear you are satisfied.

Yes, very. For the fast twisties we have up in Scotland they are ideal! I'm sure KW are very good too but I'm not that good a driver so wouldn't have a clue where to start in terms of setting them up.

Cheers

Hugh

Precisely my line of thinking - I know myself all too well and can't see me fiddling with the set-up, continuously not getting it right... And yes, I'm poor at DIY too.

  • Author

Thanks for the info Shugz.

I think i'll go for the Billie springs as well as the shocks and hopefully i'll hav a car that can corner like it should!

lol Glad to hear I'm not alone!

Kenny,

I have still got the standard springs on, the car has not been lowered at all. Jim at Star Performance should be able to advise you as that's where mine were fitted.

Cheers

So which ones did you choose, Hugh? The B6 Sport? That would work with the standard springs.

I will be going with either the B6 or B8 - my 4x4 is lowered, but that's compared to the silly off-road rideheight, so I guess either would fit. They are a fair bit cheaper than KW V1 too, so if you don't need anything to fiddle with, they are the way to go. The B12 kit is the B8 with lowering springs included.

Would be interested to see a price/spec/experience comparison between KW V1/2/3 and Bilstein B14/16, though.

thought the RS would be quicker than a 15.9.

When I ran my near stock 5 turbo up santa pod I was doing 16 second dead SQM's crossing the line at 77-82 mph. Having said that the 5 did weigh as much as a biscuit tin. A clio 172 only beat me by 0.1 of a second, not bad considering I was giving away about 50 bhp.

  • Author

I thot 15.9 was rather good! I was expecting mid to high 16s so i was well impressed with the times.

A Clio 172 can do the 1/4 in the low 15s if it is driven by someone who could get it off the line properly.

Also i think the Pod has a grippy surface wereas Crail has standard concrete and its also bumpy! :)
