As far as I can tell from a quick look in the Haynes manual there's no interval - you just replace them if they fail.

I would say that they are just a replacement part when the tip burns out??

Never had to replace a glowplug yet in any of the old diesels I've owned and I think they last significantly longer as they're barely used compared to spark plugs...

Had to replace them on 2 old Peugeot XUD engines. Being low pressure diesels, they rely on glow plug / intake manifold temp a lot more than newer high pressure diesels and as such are a lot more crucial for starting. They're a pig to do on those engines as they're buried in the intake. You end up chafing your fingers a lot and needing to take off fuel feed pipes from the injector pump to get to them.

i've never replaced any glow plugs on the PD engined Ford Galaxys at work , so as with most things on that engine , they are very long lived

I had one fail on a VW LT35 2.5TDI (110) at about 65k miles. We changed all 5 of course but IIRC one was an absolute **** - you couldn't see or even feel it!

The obvious signs of failure are poor cold starting followed by a lot of grey smoke when it does catch. They're usually in the order of £4 to £5 each.
