How can I tell which 1.4 engine I've got?

Featured Replies

It just says MPI on the cover.

Is there something that identifies the 8v or the 16v engines?

Cheers guys

I think (and I could be way off the mark) that the 1.4-16v has a cylindrical air filter whereas the 1.4-8v has a square one (as per the vRS et al). Maybe members can post up pics of their 1.4 engines to help you identify the differences?

Cheers guys,

I'll compare this picture to my engine.

Looks like it's the 8v, which is fine by me.

Although by driving it I couldn't tell, it's got feck all power at low revs, and midrange is kinda empty too.

Top end is not exactly ferocious either, but hey ;-)

That's strange, I love the torque you get in the low range in 1st and 2nd, are you not achieving this? I can beat most things off the line... perhaps you have to learn to harness the power :)

I agree that the mid and high range is not the best... if you want that you need to get a VRS :D

I've driven some years ago a 1.9 100bhp TDI and it was very nice indeed, lots of unexpected (for me!) midrange.

This 1.4MPi feels empty though, maybe it's the clutch biting too high up, who knows. I'll get used to it I guess.

During the test drive I noticed that the whole rev range was usable, but there was no particular urgency - unlike the TDi.

If it can return 40-50mpg without much mechanical trouble I'll be happy :-)

40-50mpg... wow.. you'll be lucky...

I get maximum 37/38mpg out of mine.... I reckon if you drove like a vicar doing 56mph down dual carriageways and motorways you might just about get 45mpg

the 1.4 8V lump is not the most refined, but you'll never need to do a cam belt change as it doesnt have one (it's got a cam chain that is *supposed* to last for the life of the engine... it'll just get nice and rattley.. then you might think about changing it)

enjoy your furby

high 30s? That's not very good from such a small engine in a lighweight car is it

Then again, for low-mileage usage like myself, it is depreciation that is the biggest cost, and that is next to nothing. You win some, you lose some, eh

... it's not that light.... If you do a search you'll see that all us 1.4MPI drivers all winge about the poor fuel economy... its one of those things :o

Hi , my MPI gets approx 38 mpg in urban motoring (30 and 40 mph limits) , mid 40s on a run (60 and 70 mph limits) , I have seen high 40s on the MFA readout a few times , in cases where ive been stuck behind one of those '3mph under the speed limit at all times' kind of drivers!! Mine is pretty low milage though , 37500 at the moment , and thats a 2000 registered V reg example.

BTW I find the 8V engine is fine , ive seen 3 figures on the speedo before!! ;)

Nowt wrong with the fuel consumption on my 8v. Just under 400 miles to a tank for me. Nicely run in now with 68k on the clock.

Did anyone say to check under the carpet in the boot (LH side)? It tells you there what motor you have and what kWage it has.

Nate

my 8v has 119000 miles on it but is ticking and clicking like a *******. and the clutch needs replacing.

Good to hear its a strong engine ours has just hit 55k on a 52 plate :)

i got from new a 05 plate 1.4 16v sports with all the trimmings and 20,000 on the clock. does me about 40/45mpg easy.
