Wandering Revs at Idle

Featured Replies

My 2001 51 plate fabia 1.4 8v classic needs a new clutch. however when sitting at traffic lights the revs begin to wander from maybe 1000 rpm to 1200rpm. what could be the cause of this problem? Please help.

First thoughts are:

  • Throttle Body needs cleaning out and / or
  • Temperature Sensor faulty and / or
  • Thermostat stuck open
  • Lambda Probe? (O2 sensor) fault

If your temperature gauge sticks to the left and does not move to the middle, this is an indication that the temp sensor is faulty.

Lumpy idle is an indication of throttle body issue

Thermostat stuck open will mean that your engine wont reach operating temperature, so you may find that your temp gauge will rise a small amount and stay there.

of course - i'm an amateur at this car malarkey, I expect others with provide more detailed diagnostics, but first thing to do is to hook it up to VAG-COM and look at the codes.

Cheers for the quick reply.

i have been quoted £400 to replace the throttle bodies.

does this sound resonable??

£400 does sound expensive, but then again, i've never had to get a quote for anything like that before.

Best thing to do is to ask a few places and a main stealer to see what the range of prices are.

lol

stealer is the exact terminology i would use to describe them boys

762 quid for a clutch kit and labour!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Just had the throttle body replaced on my 1.4 16v Fabia. Total cost was £570.49. 2 coil packs and the spark plugs. £290 for the throttle body.
