When to change cambelt and what exactly needs doing please

Featured Replies

Hello all

Mine is an Ocatvia 1.8T 4x4 02 plate. It currently has 61,000 odd miles on the clock. When does it need doing? What exactly should I get done? Anything else while they are working on that part of the engine (unrelated) worth having done (save on labour later on?)? Where to go and what kind of money?

Thanks to all

:)Needs doing now! Change water pump at the same time for the metal impeller type. Will cost you between £300 and £350 depending on where you go.

Thanks for the speedy reply David will get on the case asap.

I paid £299 at Awesome GTI inluding the waterpump

Have the water pump changed as well. See my post in this thread for a picture of why you should do so.

I would do the cambelt asap, with waterpump and idler pulleys, plus a normal service. An idependant garage might read the manual and say inspection only at this mileage but IMHO i dont trust that. Inspection will not show anything unless its going to go in the next 1000 miles or so.

Thanks for all the replies...so cambelt, water pump, idler pulleys and service...Awesome GTI the place to go I guess

Anyone know how much for just the parts? I'm wondering if it'll be cheaper for me to buy them when I'm in the UK next year.

I ordered my bits from GSF... have a look on their website. I got the cambelt kit and a new aux belt. The only bit that I found hard was the tensioner as I did not have a proper tool I had to cheat a bit!
