Odd "laser" noise

Featured Replies

:D I noticed this for the first time this morning - to the point where I had to turn the radio off and verify.

On throttling up, medium ish (still bedding in that clutch) and letting off, about 1 second after I let off I get a kind of "laser" noise (you know the type, like something off Star Wars).... I put this down to some kind of echo the BMC box is generating - but the noise appears to eminate from out the exhaust....

Shall keep an eye (I mean ear :D) out for it in the future, but it's quite a quirky noise if it's in any way related to my turbo dumping boost during gearchanges....

I remember from the giftshop of the Air and Space Museum in Washington DC that the noise is made by a slack spring in a tube. Find something like that, and you'll have your culprit!!!

slack spring in a tube? Well, it must be in the turbo pipework somewhere I suppose. I can only put it down to the BMC box but there's not many running this box and I don't know if others have seen similar things? :) The car always did "dump" boost due to the state of tune it's in, but the noise has changed. :D

Whoah, sounds awesome......do you actually get lasers coming out of the car too? You need to dress as a ninja pirate whilst driving it now to complete the effect. :D

As my mate is insured on the car, I might ask him to drive up and down the road outside my house whilst I video it.... :)

It will be the air filter matey, i remember the first time i took my surround off the dynatwist on my FR TDI it sounded like woohhoo when you lifted off and changed gear, sounds good

Is it not compressor stall and it sounds more like a turkey gobble

Not like a turkey gobble for sure - It's not a noise which reverberates. I have decided after listening to it on my way home it sounds more like the "whoooo" bit of an owl's "too-wit, too-whoooo"

So is it really a noise coming all the way from the airbox, through the system to the exhaust? I'm curious how I'm hearing it from the exhaust. :D

PS: My old clutch pics are up. ;)

yep its strange, as i thought it was just at the front of the car, then my mate drove it and i was videoing it and it made the sound, was hillarious though. Only did it when lightly throttling though and then lifting off or changing gear.
