Please help settle an argument

I've just changed the headlight bulb on my Octy. I just unclipped the back cover inside the engine bay, unclipped the bulb and fitted a new one in the reverse order. No problem - 5 minute on a garage forecourt.

However, I'm told this is wrong and it's not possible to change the bulb without removing the whole lamp cluster.

I know I'm not wrong in my case so, the question is, are there different types that require removing the whole assembly?

It depends on the size of your hands / fingers - some (like me) can't, others seem very able without disassembling the front of the car.

depends also if you have xenon's or normal lamps.

I have hands like a goalkeeper and I managed to change mine without removing the lamp cluster!

No experience on the dipped beam due to xenons but I have to pull the fitting out to replace the H1 main beam, the indicators and sidelights are the same for me.

I wasn't blessed with dainty hands.

It takes less than a minute to pull the light cluster out and I'll always do it like that to reduce the risk of touching the lamp when fitting.

I also have to remove the whole lamp cluster. I find a quick 10 minute job.

You can do it without removing the light cluster it's just that it's a whole lot easier to do it with it out and as it takes less than a minute to remove it there is no reason not to.
