Power Stering Fliud Check How Easy

Featured Replies

Hi I have noiced the power steering going heavy on start up but then clearing. However today my warning light came on. I park on a slight incline and the ps light comes on then clears when on the level which is pointing to power loss.

Can someone tell me how easy is it to check the level. I have searched the forum and I believe you have to remove the battery. I have no problem doing this but will it wipe out my settings etc.

My car is a 2000 1.4v comfort.

Thanks in advanced GAZ.

It's unlikely to be the power assisted steering oil level, far more likely to be either:

a) A faulty power assisted steering sensor (common fault)

or

B) A battery on it's way out...

If your lights flicker occasionally when driving, it's most likely to be the faulty steering sensor...

Correct the reservoir (and the pump) live under the battery.

So you need to disconnect the battery and remove it to gain access to the filler.

The dipstick is on the lid.

Worth a try but any major leakage is bad news as it means a fault in the pipe work or rack.

Typically if the pump is on the way out the warning light starts to come on sooner and sooner in your journey.

What mileage have you covered ?

Wide wheels may put a bit more strain on it too.

Cheers

Thanks for the replies

The car has done 55k and i am runing on 16 inch wheels.

I tend to think its the sensor given the cars age. But cant do the replacement as I have very little tools.

Does anyone know a good non frnachise VAG garage in the St Helens/ Wigan area. I have seen the signs for one in Haydock but dont know much about it.

Dont mind paying out for a good job.
