flat battery

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

Im new to this site and wondered if anybody would be able to help me. I drive a 2001 octavia vrs with remap, 57i kit, magnex stainless cat back system and bailey dump valve. For the past few months now i've hardly used her due to work commitments and so on. After she has been stood for 3-4 days the battery will drain completely flat from a full charge. i've replaced the battery twice, replaced the hazard light relay/switch, disabled the phone kit, even left it unlocked for a week and it still drained flat. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

with the use of a multimeter you will have to check the drain on the battery , remove a fuse at a time to see which circuit the drain i on

Clip a meter on 20 amps from the Positive + lead to Positive battery terminal then remove battery connector. The meter if switched to the lower ranges will show the amount of current (amps or part of an amp) which is being taken by , Alarm and radio from the battery, when the car is not in use.My car showed a value of about 0.15 amps (150 milliamps).

If your careful you can do this without ever removing battery 12 volt supply, which would need clock and radio to be reset. But dont open any doors etc whilst checking because this will raise the current being taken ,and might damage the meter (if not fused)

I saw these in Maplins the other day. You plug it into the fuse holder and it shows the drain on the circuit.

Maplin > Automotive Current Tester

It is better and quicker to measure the whole amount of drain on the battery ,before resorting to taking out fuses to find where the current is being taken:

For example when you replace a fuse with meter ,the drivers door will be open ,which turns on the interior lights, taking current which will give you a higher reading on that circuit.
