Featured Replies

hi everyone i have a trojan virus on my laptop which is an ***!! i have macafee internet security which did not stop the trojan from being installed which is crap and it picks up the trojan and quanratines it on start up but when you try to remove it it will not go anywhere are there any good free trojan removal tools you could recommend so i can get rid the computer is running very slow and the internet has got from 700kb download to 30kb arrrggggg!!! ps i have tried the symantec trojan removal tool but for some reason i cant run it on vista...i know where the .dll file is but it says it is always in use so i cant delete it cheers anyone who can help :)

Remember to switch off 'system restore' before trying to remove the trojan. Some of them will reinstall next you start windows if you don't.

MacAfee should be okay. If not find the name of the trojan and search the symantec for a removal tool / help

Edit: viruses will be only be 'reinstalled' if you restore to point where you previously had a virus.

hi everyone thanks for your reply so far i downloaded that ccclean or something like that and it removed alot of crap i put the computer in safe mode and manually deleted the location for the trojan file but everytime now i restart a new file is created so the trojan it appears to be reproducing itself i have run the trojan removal tool in safe mode also from symantec so dont know what the hell is going off do you think it would be a good idea to re install macafee just in case the trojan is being produced for macafee?

Turning off system restore is completely irrelevant. If your system last restored after the virus entered your system, then you can't use it. On the other hand, it if didn't then you may wish to try restoring your system albeit this may not fix the problem. But what is turning off system restore going to achieve? Nothing.

I've seen this recommendation several times and I'm starting to get annoyed by it (for which I apologise).

Clidgevrs, it seems quite likely that the virus is linked to your registry and is being called at startup.

Click on Start - Run and type msconfig then press enter. Under the startup tab, deselect everything apart from your anti-virus.

Before rebooting, clear your internet cache (I will assume you know what to do). Also clear files from your Temp folders (C:\Windows\Temp and C:\Documents and Settings\'username'\Local Settings\Temp) n.b. Local Settings may be hidden, click Tools - Folder Options, under tab click View and radio button 'Show hidden files and folders', then apply.

Now reboot and run your virus scan again.

I had a similar :thumbdwn: around 5 months ago.

Would kill off the processes, find the linked files too and delete them. Clean everywhere else too and then reboot.

Back it came - process under a slightly different name.

Luckily I use imaging software so was able to go back to a previous sysytem backup.

Later - I did see the name of the virus (I'm sure it was a virus) but cannot for the life of me remember what it was.

I presume you've tried going back to a previous system restore points (let's say) a few weeks ago ?

You say you've run CClean - CrapCleaner , this is basically a system cleaner - and McAfee (but not tried any other tools than the one which refused installation and Spybot).

Give this a try

ewido - anti-spyware and anti-malware solutions

Part freeware and part shareware i.e. after 30 days some features become disabled but you can still run the basic package.

Heard good reports about Ewido (has now been incorporated into AVG Anti-Virus which i used for some 3 years).

thanks mate for that got it running on the laptop now will check at lunch time but the whole machine is affected download speed is shocking and everything keeps locking up and programs load very very slowely bugger!!! if this does not work what options are left to me as i did not do a restore point whichi i know is silly but i was hoping that crappy macafee at the price it cost would have stopped things like this

if this does not work what options are left to me as i did not do a restore point whichi i know is silly but i was hoping that crappy macafee at the price it cost would have stopped things like this

Options - phew

1st backup all information important to you onto a CD / DVD / external USB drive.

2nd have a go with some more anti-virus anti-trojan programs.

3rd - see if you've some computer whizz buddies.

4th - see if anyone else on here comes up with any better solutions.

5th - If not then you'll have to do a format of your hard drive (to totally get rid of virus / trojan) and a complete fresh reinstall.

6 - read up on Acronis TrueImage Home Hard disk drive cloning and image backup software: computer files and disk copy / Norton (Symantec) Ghost (lots of different versions of this) i.e. imaging programs and think about getting one of these and using it (the programs just suggested are shareware - there are freeware ones available but are not quite as goood and cannot recommend any as I've not used them). They are the simplest way to completely overwrite virus / trojan infections and restore your system to a 'snapshot' of your system which you created at some time in the past.

7 - and also get yourself a different anti-virus / trojan / spyware program than McAFee - plenty of suggestions will be posted here I'm sure.

1 - Has McAfee identified the Trojan by name?

Some of them have very specific removal methods or you might get a removal program. Google for it. Read carefully different AV companies can give the same virus different names.

2- If it's slowing down you internet connection it might be spyware rather than a Trojan that is your problem. In which case get something like Lavasoft Adaware, Ewido (as mentioned) or A-Squared. And see if these guys pick up anything else.

It wouldn't be unusual for 1 little nasty to develop into 5 or 10000 as it downloads it's buddies.

3 - Very important! right now you cannot trust your computer. So no internet banking, no shopping, no eBay nothing that will involve revealing passwords, account details or card numbers

4 - If this is starting to take ages to fix consider a reformat and reinstall. You're looking at about 6hr to do that so consider how long you want to spend trojan hunting and if you'll ever trust the machine without a reformat.

Remember to back up your important files. Write down usernames, passwords that are stored on the machine (email, internet access) plus any other settings that you might have trouble getting again (pop3 boxes, bookmarks, etc etc).

Gather all your driver disks etc if you don't have a restore CD.

You can use Produkey to get all the license keys for Microsoft software if you've lost them.

ProduKey - Recover lost product key (CD-Key) of Windows/MS-Office/SQL Server

If you're not happy with McAfee try one of the free AV solutions like AVG or Avast.

If you have a router with a firewall turn it on

If you don't get a software firewall like Zonealarm (£0).

Run Firefox rather than Internet Explorer and get the Adblock and NoScript add ons.

Happy hunting

hi everyone thank you so so much for all your help i found my system restore disk that came with the computer it wiped all my hard drive and installed everythng again from fresh and all is working well again thank the lord just need to establish my network link again and i am back on what i have learned from this is when i install macafee i am going to take a glimpse of the computer in it original state and if it happens again i can just use this. Obviously macafee missed this from happening what other program can i run in the back ground that maybe are free (he he) to boost the areas macafee has obviously failed many thanks again

Is your copy of mcAfee up to date?

They (the AV companies) have a habit of introducing new versions every year leaving users of the older version out in the cold.

I would strongly suggest Avast or AVG (I use avast but both are good) you'll get program updates and signature files for free. Plus they are less intrusive than McAfee or Norton.

Try to get downloads of ^, antispyware software, Firewall and Firefox BEFORE you go online.

I've seen a fresh machine get hit before my eyes within 30sec of it going back online.
