Clutch going???

Featured Replies

My TDI clutch has started to make that certain clutch burning smell,it's not slipping and the gears are engaging fine.

So has anyone else had this happen or is my clutch on its way out?

How much for a new one from an independent?

Is it actually the clutch then? Usually, it will overheat, then slip badly, and the smell follows quick after.

Cuold it be anything else?

I did change the oil and filter the other day and I am quite sure that I spilt no oil,but if I did does diesel oil smell like petrol oil when it's burnt on let's say an exhaust?

Difficult to put that kind of smell down to anything else to be honest. But if the clutch is stinking, it should be slipping like buggery really.... :) Binding brakes?

Thank you for the thoughts.

I will check the brakes.

If not the brakes I do not know what else it could be.

Will keep you posted on any further developments.

Sticking it in 5th gear at about 30mph and floor it. See what happens to the revs Vs speed catchup. Should be the best way to see if there is any slip.

I'm the most clutch-unfriendly driver known to man and mine's not had any problems after 3 years with me and a year as a showroom demo. Unless you've remapped it I'd be thinking probably not the clutch?

Or put the handbrake on and see what happens when you let in the clutch in first gear with your foot off the accellerator.

If the cluch is slipping badly you should be able to let it (nearly) all of the way in without the car stalling.

Make sure you're not parked behind anything when you try it!!!

Checked the brakes and they are not binding.

Tried the 5th gear thing and it's not slipping.

But still the smell is there.icon5.gif

not come accross this in the skoda, but when I had a ford focus for a while, it would make that smell all the time..... just reversing round a corner up a hill would cause it to smell badly, but it never slipped or broke....

how long have you had the car? was the clutch replacved with a "cheap" item recently? or is this a new thing....

Had car 13 months, 51 plate,73000 miles on original clutch, came with full histiry of work and service done by main dealer.

No remap or any mods at all.

Sorted it.

It was the handbrake cable which was sticking -- but not every time--

Gave it plenty of WD40 to clean and free it up and then copper grease to keep it free.:D
