Types Of Mpi Engines??

Featured Replies

I want to ask another question concerning these MPI engines.

Why are there so many different types?

Which is the best to have and what are the differences between them??

The replies are appreciated.

Cheers again.

Only two engines are officially labelled "MPI" the 1.4 68BHP engine based on the 1.3 from Skoda and the VAG 2.0 115BHP, all of the petrol engines use multi point injection (MPI), but Skoda use the MPI badge to dirrentiate 8v and 16v Models

1.2 6v HTP 54BHP

1.2 12v HTP 64BHP

1.4 MPI 68BHP

1.4 16v 75 BHP (Automatic and Sport)

1.4 16v 100BHP (Two models, one revised)

2.0 MPI 115BHP

In Summary (ALL IN IMHO):

1.2 6v HTP 54BHP - Too Slow

1.2 12v HTP 64BHP - Sounds Great and goes reasonably well for a 1.2

1.4 MPI 68BHP - Dead throttle response, but torquey at low revs, can be unreliable (head Gasket)

1.4 16v 75 BHP (Automatic and Sport)- Gutless

1.4 16v 100BHP (Two models, one revised)- Torque too high in power band, dead throttle, can be unreliable (Piston Rings)

2.0 MPI 115BHP- 115BHP from a 2.0 engine, is this a joke?

Iv'e driven all except the 2.0, if I had any it would be the 1.2 or the good old chain driven MPI or better yet, the turbodiesels

Great info there. Might be worth adding - I saw in the Haynes that the 1.4 MPI is an ohv engine. The 1.2 and the other 1.4s will be ohc.

Edit: The 100 bhp 1.9 TDi is good if you can afford it, but I've driven a 1.2 12v too and that's nice.

Production Started about 552 BC:D

I have the 8v 68 bhp model in classic spec.

What is the difference between the AZE and all the others etc except for the bhp and also why, when ordering a timing chain, are there different types of timing chains for each of these engines?

Cheers for all the replies so far, they are appreciated.

1.4 8v has 3 Codes I think

AZF - 60BHP (Eastern Europe)

AQW - 68BHP

AZE - I think is revised to fix the head gasket problems, but I could be wrong, perhaps a more technical minded person will be able to answer this
