Funny clicking noise

Featured Replies

I realise this sounds vague but I have a noise that is the one thing that irks me about my 2.0 TDI Octy. It is an intermittent , ill-defined and variable clicking sound from behind the dash. Sometimes it occurs in fairly rapid succession (tick, tick .. tick) or sometimes it is twenty or thirty seconds apart. The tick/click/cluck varies slightly in noise level and duration and even, I‘m fairly certain, in precise location (I think it ranges from either side of the steering wheel). After careful listening I cannot identify what triggers it, neither bumps, nor turning can guarantee it and AC or heating on seems to have no effect.

Any ideas?

Chris

Funny you have mentioned this rather puzling noise that you can hear behind the dash, because I have been aware of a similar noise as well!

Same car, 2.0 TDi Octavia. L + K Estate, 55 vintage.

It usually becomes apparent just after starting to move off and sounds like a quiet "clunk, clunk, clunk", then stops, or seems to stop as speed increases. To my ears it seems to come from the area behind the glove box or perhaps towards the center of the car. I have checked that there is nothing in the glove box to make the noise and nothing obvious about A/C use, road conditions etc.

The noise has been a feature of the car for about a year and I have just learnt to live with it. Any suggestions of the source of the noise would be gratefully received.

:iagree:

Highly likely to be the climatronic system, could be the recirculation damper or similar behind the glove compartment.

You have small motorised dampers behind the dash that control air distribution to various parts of the car and they do make a certain amount of noise.

If you feel the noise is invasive then take the car to your dealer as they can play up sometimes and make more noise than they should do.

Thanks for these comments. A climatronic 'feature' seem most likely but I will listen more carefully. It does seem to go at speeds above 30 mph.

And so far it appears to be harmless

Thanks

Chris

You'll find the road noise will drown it out above certain speeds. It's most noticeable when sitting in traffic.

Hmm. I don't think I've ever had it when I've been stopped; but I wil listen out carefully. It appears to be a low speed noise.

Apologies if this has been covered already elsewhere.

This clicking is known to Skoda dealers, in fact there is a specific service bulletin covering it. It required a software modification on the Climatronic system, this modifies the physical range of travel of certain moving parts (not sure what they are, but they are located within the dashboard adjacant to the passengers knees). Mine was fixed at Platinum Skoda in Bath, if you have problems with your dealer not finding the service bulletin, refer them to Martyn Chun (the service manager at Platinum Skoda in Bath, 01225 324910) who will tell them where to find it.
