carbs on a 1.3 mpi

Featured Replies

hi peeps, lookin round a few threads on how t get more power outa he 1.3 mpi i noticed a few ppl mentioned gettin carbs, 40's r they? now im a newb to all this mecanics mallarky but thanks t here an fiddlin wit me own car im gettin a gd idea.

q.would it be worth gettin carbs an how do they effect the engiine etc? plus whats the extra "go" like when there on?

Forget it if it's a regular road-going car. You'll never get them to work properly with the catalyser and the car will fail the MOT.

fair enuff,lol.cheers

the car will fail the MOT.

actually the 1.3 will pass with flying colours. but your right in that there a pain to keep tuned.

iirc you could get carb fed felicias in Europe.

Much as I love the sound of twin Weber side-drafts, if I was tuning an already injected and EMS car, I'd go for something like an Emerald or Megasquirt ECU, and throttle body injection.

ye i heard about throttle bodies? what do they do an do you gain much? sound like a right so n so to fit like.

Throttle bodies work much the same way as twin DCOEs (one straight air path from a plenum past the fuel jet to the head joint for each cylinder). The difference is in having a fuel injector to squirt an exact quantity of fuel into the port, rather than relying on air velocity through a throttle venturi to draw fuel. Basically it's an issue of precision rather than an intrinsic benefit, so you don't get better peak power with the rest of the set up the same, but you get better power everywhere else with injection.

Either way, unless you make other changes (modified head, new camshaft, and a decent extractor manifold as minimum), and sort the ignition timing for the revised engine, you'll not actually see much if any better power.

ask teflontom what TB's are like.
