Fuse box wiring burnt out.

Featured Replies

Hullo all.I have recently had a new alternator and battery fitted.now i have found that the headlights do not work, the heater blower does not work, the wipers, rear fog light also.i checked all the fuses, all good.I noticed the wiring in the fuse box had burnt out,a number of the wires are fused together.car starts first time even on a cold morning start.all other electrics seem fine, all lights apart from headlights ok,interior lights ok,horn, radio, warning lights etc ok.any suggestions greatly appreciated.many thanks in advance.

You will most likely have to change the whole wiring loom. I had to do this on an old audi, and it wasnt only the wires that were burnt. The fuse box had also melted and lots of other stuff.

A cheap but not so quick fix would might be going to a breakers yard, cutting out the same section of the wiring loom and maybe getting the fuse box and then soldering the new box and wires in into the car.

But one thing is to remember: you must fix what caused the whole thing to fail before installing something new.

Or else it will only happen again.

But i must say you are driving around in a matchbox. A little bump in the road and your dash might be burning.

Hullo all.Good news on the burnt out wiring.I took the felicia to an auto electrician. He rang me after a couple of hours telling me he had found out what the problem was,it was due to the alarm being disconnected at some time prior to me buying the car.this had not been done correctly and had shorted out the wiring, hence the burnt out wires.he has fixed the problem with the head lights, heater rear fog lamp etc.he told me that the fuse box itself had quite a few problems and that he could bypass the fue box and it would be fine.I asked if in future i could still replace a blown fuse if needed,he replied certainly the fuse box will be exactly the same and it would only be the wiring to it that would be different.I have to pick up later today. If i find any more info i will post it for all to read for future refference.Just hoping now all is back to normal.Thank you for your reply.Much appreciated.

Thats great! Good news!

Hullo all.Picked car up from auto ellectrician,he had done the rewiring job....Excellent.... Car back to normal. Statrs 1st time all electrics working as should. All for a mere fifty quid.He even checked out the passenger door central lock[it works but intermittently locking with key from drivers side]he says its the lock motor and if i can get one he will fit it for me.A real genuine geezer. The passenger door does lock occasinally with the central locking. When it fails it locks directly with the key,so i think i will leave it as it is.He was a little bit miffed when i told him i had bought a battery and had the altenator reconditioned earlier.he sells batteries and also reconditions alternators.I will know in future to visit him first.Great bloke. Thanks to all for the replies.

good to hear.

out of intrest. and as a bench mark for other users. what did it cost you to get it fixed?

Yeah this is something I'd expect to cost a bomb and force me to get the soldering iron out until I give up and scrap it.

:rolleyes:Fifty quid...he says so in his post!;):D:thumbup:

Hi sounds like you got away lightly

I am struggling with a lighting problem just now with my Felicia 1.9

switching on the lights does nothing

no side lights, dashboard or headlamps or back lights

but interior light works, and the headlamps work when i use the steering column flasher, brake lights work fine

checked relay R1, swapped with R5 - no change

checked fuses all ok

changed switch no change

now rushing around trying to get a fix before MOT is due,

dont want to scrap the old girl 200k on clock, had since new

any help much appreciated, even a wiring diagram would help trouble shoot

Try tapping the fusebox and ensure all fuses are seated properly. If you can get a fusebox from a scrappy I'd try that as one option.

For a wiring diagram Halfords should have a haynes manual for the Felicia for £18.99.

Another possibility is I have heard you can present your vehicle as a car without any headlights by taping over them then it's up to you to drive during daylight only. I would check it out before trying it though :)

sounds like the switch for the lights to me - you'll need to get that middle switch panel off and check your button still works!
