Three niggles froma newbie

Featured Replies

Hi - I've only just introduced myself and am already asking for advice ...

W reg Felicia estate (26,000 miles, owned from new by my brother in law) - perfect in every way EXCEPT -

1. Sunroof leaks on front right hand corner, soaking the interior lining. I opened the sunroof, cleaned the rubber as far as I could get to it, closed it, pressed the surround up tight to the roof from inside but it still leaks. Is this a known problem or is it just that it has sat about a lot and the rubber has perished? Rubber looks fine, BTW.

2. Brother-in-law had a severe bump with a high kerb which destroyed the driver-side front wheel & tyre.

That's been replaced and everything seems fine re steering and suspension, but when the steering wheel is straight, the front wheels aren't, so when driving the steering wheel is at the position you would expect for a gradual left-hand turn.

Don't want to distress my b-i-l by asking as he's quite frail so - is this a known foible or should I get it checked out?

3. Central locking doesn't always lock all the doors. This is not using the remote, just the key in the driver's lock. Sometimes works, but one-in-five it doesn't. Is this a DIY job (given am not particularly techie but can do simple things if given step-by-step guidance?

Sorry to introduce myself in such a needy post :o, but should be very grateful for any pointers.

hi there.

i have had the sunroof problem on two of mine. took it to the dealer who put some goo round were the car roof meets the sunroof seround. worked a treat.

as for steering. so long as it's not pulling to one side, it should be safe, if no a little annoying

The tracking has been 'knocked out' so will need re-aligning.

Best off getting tracking checked.

The sunroof leak. I had the same issue on mine. Took the sunroof off, cleaned that and the rubber. Then Vaselined the seal. Hass't leaked since although I have ben told by fellow Skoda owners a silicon sealant would be better.

Silicone oil :)

Can't find where I saw it mentioned first, but came across this short sunroof guide. Apparently vaseline isn't great for the rubber seals, but I must admit before I knew this I used it and have had no problems, so maybe it's worrying over nothing.

Start with the gasket, which is the seal between the glass and the main body of the sunroof. The days of tired, worn, rubber gaskets are a thing of the past. Sunroofs today use long lasting high tech materials like silicone and EDPM rubber which resist UV and other damaging effects that Mother Nature dishes out! Clean the gasket at least twice a year with a clean, damp, lint free cloth. Occasionally, use a mild detergent solution, depending on conditions in your area (i.e. dust, leaves, salt etc.), followed by a rinse using a new cloth and fresh clean water. NEVER apply mineral oil, petroleum jelly or vinyl dressing to your gasket. Occasional application of light silicone lubricating spray may be fine if recommended by the manufacturer.

Care & Cleaning of your Sunroof

As for central locking, there was another thread on this recently. I think the concensus was to get the door cards off and grease the mechanisms.

When the sunroof leaked on my favvy i lifted the rubber a bit and put in a length of thin wire, this put a bit more pressure on the rubber up to the glass and stopped it leaking

Thankfully i don't have a sunroof, but i do have problems with the central locking. About 50% of the time the front passenger side doesn't go down with the rest, works second time round though. Rear driver's side 'nib' seems very stiff too

Remove the door cards and give the lock mechanism a good soaking with WD40

Sorry to be so dense, but how do I remove the 'door cards? (Numpty guide required)

iirc its all held on with philips head screws, you mite have to pop off the cover on the window winder and handle to access the screws. once all screws are out prize offf the card from the door gently starting at the bottom with a large flat instrument. be careful with speaker wire
