The Power steering in my Yreg fabia has broke (warning light on and steering very heavy). Can anyone tell me whether the steering is Electric or mechaninical in this model and roughly how much it will cost me to get it fixed.

Have you checked the sensor 'steering angle sensor'?

A common failure on fabia's.

Had the same thing on my 2001 elegance. The Pump failed out of the blue.. no dip in performance before hand..

could be your sensor.. I had them check mine first, but it wasn't :-(
