Featured Replies

Right car is due its next service and im adamant that im not taking it to the stealers

The car has had services so far like this

5,070 miles - 18/03/05

13,429 miles - 26/11/05

23,836 miles - 21/07/06

(big gap )

37,461 miles - 1/10/07

Now the car is on 44,000 and im thinking ahead to the next service, (might make it 8k)

So what do i NEED to replace?

Last brake fluid change was the 23k service /\ 21/07/06

Coolant was just changed when i got my Helix clutch

Air filter is 5k miles old and is a green cotton filter

So what needs done guys?

Sorry to be a pain

If you're thinking of doing yourself, you're crazy.

Oil, oil filter, air filter, new sump plug and washer.

:)

How's that crazy? would be a damn sight better job than a Skoda dealership.

Im actually taking it to a private VAT registered garage but im going to supply all the bits, they can stamp my history too....

Im thinking

Oil - what type of oil, i want the best?

Oil filter

Air filter NOT needed as green cotton one fitted

Fuel filter

Change brake fluid? Dot 5.1??

Coolant is fine

Wheres the best place to get the bits (also need receipts/invoices)

Why? I do most of my servicing myself and I'm no mechanic. It's easy. I sign the service book each time I do a service and mark down what I've done. I got one service done and they charged 600 for a service and to change the front pads and disks, never again!

Good man for doing bits yourself. I have a few mates who do the same. Hope the drive on sunday wasn't too hard on your Fabia..lol

4.3 litres, so a five litre can

My stealer told me that the brake fluid needs changing every 2 years. So if its been that it might be worth doing.

Out of interest how much would it cost ME to change the brake fluid myself? The stealer wanted £56!

If you have all the tools for the change, it's just the cost of the fluid and depending on what you want super DOT 4 or 5.1 can be had for 10 quid from Halfords (which seems to stand up well to the abuse my brakes get :D)...

£10! Dealers really are stealers!

You have to remember that £10 is just for materials though. You're paying the extra money for a skilled/trained technician to do the job in a kitted out workshop and I'm guessing £40 is 1/2 hour's labour. Independents will be cheaper as they often command a lower labour rate (mine cost just under £30 all in).

Chris

I would do,

Air filter

oil + filter

pollen filter

brake fluid change

general inspection of braking system.... steering system..... tyre condition......... engine electrics including vag com scan. then underbody inspection for corrosion or lack of underbody protection.

Thats wat a dealer does anyway....... welll you pay them to do it wether they actually do is anyones guess.

Hi,

Follow Scooby Chris's advice and go to Opie Oils site. They do a package which includes 6 litres of oil, filter and sump plug washer. Excellent. I've used twice. Prices good (even with postage) and delivery quick. Look in filter box before throwing away as washer is in there! You probably need a pollen filter, but this is a "can do anytime" item. Good idea to change the fuel filter as it's probably got a lot of water in it with such a lot of standing about during the last few years. The service is very easy, especially as the oil filter is done from above. Check that you have a big socket or spanner for the filter top (I used small stilsons first time). Tip- once you've drained oil, removed filter, cleaned and put in new washer and sump plug - fill engine with correct amount of oil through filter housing. Much easier.

Go for it. Have fun.

Sorry - I'd leave the brake fluid change; you don't need it until July and it's a good idea to do that sort of job when it's dry and warm weather. It's easy to do anyway. Check pads for thickness, but don't touch unless needing replacement. Cleaning and checking again much easier in warm weather (and you need a screw back tool for rear pads on VrS).

The pads and discs all round were just changed for grooved ones as i uprated to TT front brakes, im unsure wether the mech. changed the brake fluid though

If you let the fluid drop too far in the reservoir and air gets into the ABS block then you will need the dealer VAS or VAG Com to bleed it.
