Front Bearings...

Featured Replies

Morning All,

Wanting a bit of advice as my mechanical knowledge of cars is limited.

Took our Fabia 1.4 8v into Jewson Skoda in Oxford for the MOT last week. We passed, after replacing the left front suspension bush. However, the guys at Jewson also noted that the front bearings were "VERY NOISY" and that this should be sorted. They quoted 500 pounds to replace them.

I was a bit dubious, especially about the price. However, driving the car over the weekend I felt that there was a leftward drag on the streering and my wife (who mainly drives the car) now reports that there is a squeek coming from the front, especially when turning.

So three questions:

1. Do I need to get the brearing replaced asap or can it wait?

2. Will it cost 500 quid for a Skoda garage to do this, or is that just way too high a quote?

3. Any suggestions on alternatives to Jewson in the Reading/Oxford area?

Incidentally, the car underwent the 60K service about 6 months ago, also at Jewson.

Any thoughts very welcome.

Cheers

Daniel

£500  I had a front bearing fitted 4 months ago at an idependent garage (PD100 Estate) and although I can't remember the exact price, I think it came to about £100. The bearing is part of the hub so it does costs more than just a standard bearing but even so....

Wheel bearings can go at anytime for a multitude of reasons, however I have never had one affect the steering so you coul dhave a different issue.

They also don't squeak, they "drone" getting worse the faster you go and the longer you don't get them sorted. The MOT I believe will only fail it if there is any play in it, just a noise isn't part off especially as the MOT don't include a road test. It's not that dangereous and I have never had one seize on me but it can happen, so I wouldn't plan any long trips in it until you can get it sorted but it should be alright to drive until you can find a solution.

£500 is steep even for two so I would be getting a 2nd opinion.
