I hear 6x9 arent the way to go but..........

Featured Replies

I look on the forums and quite a few people suggest against this,

but yesterday a mate of mine gave me a skoda parcel shelf with alpine sps-690a 6x9 fitted to it for free, so I I have to try them out, its awesome knowing someone who owns a garage! so with that in mind my exisiting parcel shelf can be stored away, so my questions are.................

can I use the exisiting wiring that is in the car for the oem speakers and I was thinking of going for a pioneer headunit, but is there any pros putting it all to alpine? Currently have the skoda factory fitted stereo.......which isnt worthy!

And I dont want to get into all the amp side of things etc so they would be running off the headunit.

Any advice would be good as Im quite new to the stereo side of things.

Pioneer head unit will be fine, OEM wiring will work, but decent wiring will be better.

I put OFC loudspeaker cable from the head unit to the speakers driven by a head unit and the difference is huge :)

I'm curious - if the audio forums are against 6x9's, then what do they recommend?

Components.

They do give a better sound, but 6x9's are great for not hacking apart doorcards.

I had some 6x9's in my old octi's parcel shelf, I had no issues with the sound they produced and I used the standard cabling from the OEM speakers and ran the 6x9's fine off a kenwood HU.

Personally they will never win awards but for Joe Public I think this is a more than capable setup.

A set of properly installed component speakers (seperate woofer and tweeter) installed in the front, and a sub woofer in the boot. Both amped and set up properly.

This gives a clear and loud sound that covers the musical spectrum, and has the ablity to sound like a good home stereo.

You don't listen to your hifi at home with your back to the speakers, or go to a concert and have the artists and speakers behind you, so the car should be the same :)

The key to good sound in a car is in the instalation.

I second the above go for the most expensive front components you can afford and a sub in the rear.Spend your money on installation and sound deadening in the front doors.

 good advice there.

Components imo are better quality due to the separate (higher quality) crossover rather than the single 1p resistor used to filter the frequencies for the mid/tweeter section on coaxials/6x9s.

If the 6x9 were free :D stick em in and enjoy.

6x9 powered from head unit == good enough and cheap

Components, sound deadening and amps == better and damn expensive.

1 - Matter of opinion

2 - Not that expensive if you buy wisely or even second hand.

Ultimately it depends on what you want out of your car stereo.

Loud non descript noise or music ;)

i would love to setup the components but I cant turn down the free parcel shelf precut, and I need to get the cambelt and water pump done, so funds are tight :-)

Either option has to sound better than the oem setup!

IMHO that's utter rubbish.

A decent 4*50W head unit will be perfectly reasonable.

A car is not a good sonic stage anyway due to the shape, seats etc in the way and sub optimal location of speakers etc. Then add in engine and road noise and not matter what you do it isn't going to be great.

Compare a 3k car set up while driving against a 2k home separates set up (CD/AMP/Speakers and cables) and the home system will blow it away.

If people want to take up all the space in their car with lots of amps and spent thousands on it then I won't stop them, but a head unit, decent wiring and decent speakers will be just fine.

As for second hand, and what if it breaks, you have to buy another and another and another etc.

I would never suggest buying second hand speakers be they for home or car unless you know them.

If you don't know them, you have no idea if they've been thrashed, and as such, are liable to be buggered.
