No idle when cold?

Featured Replies

Hi

I have just found one more fault on my fun.

When the motor is cold, and i start it, i starts, at about 1100rpm, and then falls all the way down until the engine stops, if i press the speeder, the car wont take the RPMs, but just keep it self alive, at about 350rpm.

But if the engine is warm, it starts right away, and if i have my Webasto heater running for 10 minutes before the engine starts, it runs just fine.

What can be wrong?

I have a new thermostat and housing, complete with sensor, can it be the sensor failing?

Best Regards

Morten

As you describe the symptoms it sounds as if the ECU thinks that the engine is warm when it's not and that points towards a faulty sensor.

There are other explanations for poor idling. Leaking hoses or leaking inlet manifold gasket will let too much (cold) air into the system - but then you should notice this also when engine is warmed up i think?

Similar troubles have been discussed earlier, see:

Or the other possibility is a slightly over-tight throttle cable, so that the engine thinks it's being accelorated when it's not. Cheap and easy to check and fix too.

The throttle cable is fine, about 2 mm slack on it.

The car only does it when its cold.

At that rate, I'd say Swedish is on the right lines with the sensor diagnosis.
