Fusebox

Featured Replies

Thought there was a post somewhere (as in one of the central locking retro fits ) about getting to the rear of the fusebox to access unused outlets (need one unswitched and one switched supply - so out with the old meter).Anyone point me in direction of said post ,or point me in direction of getting to terminals on the fuse box - finding switched/unswitched outlets is no problem .It's for stage one in my central locking mod -to add remote control to the rear hatch ---PITA when parked to get hatch open at the shops - mrs VWD, opens driver door and hatch ,whilst I stand with trolley stopping it running amok in car park . TA in advance .

Not sure if it's any use to you, but the Elegance and some vRS's came with a 3-button key fob which allows you to remotely open the hatch. May be worth visiting some scrappers and see if you can get the bits you need to retrofit it and take the power from the same place it uses?

I cheated a bit here. The permanent 12v feed is easy - from cigarette lighter in console. Most ignition-on feeds which are easy to reach (eg handbrake) are not 12v all the time. If you take off the dash panels on drivers side (lots of guides in this site for various reasons), you can see the side of the fusebox. The fuse feeding the fan is close to the edge and you can splice onto the out line from this without disturbing anything else. Big wire to inline fuse, then whatever is correct for use. OK, maybe not the professional way, but it is neat, safe and avoids risk of breaking anything when pulling out the fusebox itself. If you do decide to use the fusebox, you'll need a fuse holder fitting (the blanks do not have a holder fitted - hence my need to cheat!)

viewer - thanks -the cigarette lighter was one idea for the 12v permanent - the switched was the problem + getting out the fusebox, but as it's not totally equipped - that looks a waste of time, so a splice looks like the best way - especially as the current needed is a measly 50mA. .

ScoobyChris -got all the bits , just built up a remote unit from Maplin - 3 ch ,added a stabilised PSU since limits are 11 -13 v ,and a cuttoff relay to shut the unit down when the ign is on - range seems adequate did a test on unit under driver seat - worked from a fair way off .

So if anyone wants a recommendation for a remote radio unit -3 chan with 5A isolated change over relays - Maplin part no 28BK -price 35.99 , they also do 1 & 2 chan units with a programable toggle output or momentary pulse (units are Quasar ,with keyloq hopping )
