Painting Caliper Advice required for numpty!

Featured Replies

Evening all,

I've got my 312's in the garage and ready to go, but I do need to paint the calipers! This is a small job for someone with DIY skills, but a large job for a DIY numpty, i.e. moi!

I've got a paint brush ;) and the Hammerite Smooth paint, but I would be grateful if anyone could give me pointers on how they did their brakes. I know a few people have recently got some 312 kits so I thought I would ask!

Thanks!

Jon

From one DIY numptie to another ;) Mine are not 312's, but I wire brushed the surface of the caliper, cleared the surface of any bits of debris and then just slapped on the paint. Repeat with a couple of coats and make sure not to get it near the bleed nipple or the piston.

20k later and my paint is still on the caliper :rofl:

If you have not completely dismantled the calipers and carriers by now you need to! Take everything apart and mask off the machined faces, these you can see clearly if they are second hand new (that means not fitted and run so far)

Once all dismantled and masked off youre ready to go. I would personally use Hammerite spray rather than brush......Good luck..

Thanks guys :) Great advice!

Any thoughts on how to mount them when painting? I initially thought about hanging them with twine, but I did not realise just how heavy they are!

I chopped up a wire coathanger into hooks and suspended the bits off my workmate.

Certainly was a job though. How hard was it to find smooth green hammerite??? Homebase, B&Q, nothing. Didn't realise Halfords stocked it :o

Halfords!? No way!!! I had to order it off the web and get ripped.

(Will go and check tomorrow!) :)

I used a degreaser to clean mine first - I think it was Gunk? bought it from Halfords - any bits of brake fluid will prevent the paint from adhering properly.

Hi there! :)

HUGE thanks (once again!) to YoungSyd (Steve) who came over this morning. It turned out we did not have the right Allen key, so after a Bacon Banjo and a quick go on the Autobrite Snow Foam Lance we headed back to Steve's where he dismantled the brakes and started painting.

He is kindly putting on a second coat tomorrow, or he may have done it already! I'll pick them up and hope to get them fitted at Jabba on Thursday :D

Once again, a BIG thanks to Steve. Appreciate it mate! I think if you have the correct Allen Key (7mm), it looks pretty easy. We separated the calipers and then hung them using heavy duty cable ties to paint - worked very well indeed.

Photos to come shortly :)

Not a problem Jon, here to help!

(Corking Bacon Banjo's by the way, does Kate know you can cook so well or is that a hidden secret!)

Hmmm.. I don't think Ramsey or Mr Oliver are getting worried ;)

HAHA.

True.... but it was nice, i could eat those every morning!

BUT, not very good for someone who is supposed to be running the Lincoln 10K in March eh!?

No more Bacon Banjos for me! (damn...!)

Hammerite coated paint brushes wont clean up in turps or cellulose thinners. Use Hammerite thinners or PETROL. The latter works just fine.

Calipers have had another coat and are currently looking great!

Ill post some pics up later on tonight!

nice one mate on the standard calipers mate do you really have to take them apart to paint or can you apply whiilst they are still on the car? whats the best prep for these to get a good finish cheers mate? is smooth finish hamerite the best mate?

Are you just painting standard caliper thats on your car?

Or new 312mm ones?

If its the ones on your car id say get some brake cleaner, and give them a good tidy up, and then apply some Smooth Hammerite...

What colour you doing them mate?

hi mate cheers for that bud i am only wanting to paint the standard callipers think the green on my red vrs looks a bit pants lol i have heard about the hammerite but want the colour to stay on the best it can and for the longest time possible cos if it flakes off will look gash like my mates saxo vtr..he let his misses put the colour on wooopppppppsss!!!!!! lol
