Felicia 1.6 GLXi won't start...

Featured Replies

Hi,

My 1998 S-reg 1.6 GLXi won't start:mad:, 1st time we've ever had a problem with it. I drove to it to a mates a mile from ny house, was there for 10 mins then the car wouldn't start. It turns over fine and the lights etc. work fine so I guess the battery is good. A friend disconnected the main central cable that connects to the distributer and checked for a spark whilst i tried to start it, nothing, no spark at all. Please could someone help!!! I'm not very technically minded when it comes to engines though...

Hi there and welcome!

Sounds like your ignition coil has gone? Unfortunately I think a new one is about £100. So I would check all the cabling leading to the igntion coils first, or maybe there's another possibile fault that will be cheaper to fix. I am sure other people will post with other things to check.

The Haynes manual describes how to test the coil, theres a cover you open up with terminals to test the resistance of the coils with a multimeter.

Thats odd

Were you having any issues with your Felicia prior to this?

On my Dads Honda we noticed it was sparking at the distributer cap but giving it a bit of a clean sorted that one.

New coil packs are available on ebay at about £25 or from local factors at about £35. The OE part number is 6n0905104 for the 1.6 and should have 3 pins in the multiplug. this unit is the same on the later favorit and felicia 1.3s, so you should be able to get one at your local scrap yard

Thanks everyone. I haven't got a Haynes manual, but I suppose the first thing I should do is check that there is a current going to the coil, if there is it must dead. I'll use some current testers and see if they light up when I connect them to the plug that attaches to the coil. Does this sound like the right way to go? Is there a fuse that is connected to the coil, if so could it just be that?

Ok if they're the same on the Favorit here's Haynes description on how to test the coil itself with a multimeter.

There are two terminals under the black flip off cover. One nearest front of car is tested with the other one under the cover, and this tests the Low Tension coil. Resistance on this should measure between 0.5 to 0.7 ohms. To test the High Tension coil, test between the point under the cover furthest away, and under the connector which leads to the distributor cap. Resistance here should measure between 3000 and 4000 ohms. If either coil doesn't measure up, the coil is almost definitely gone.

Thanks, Ok I'll get a new coil this pm (£35 - not bad). Is it quite easy to replace? How do I do it?

It's just a case of removing all the connectors and the earth connection, and unscrewing the coil itself from the inside of the wing. Then the Haynes manual favourite phrase "installation is reverse of removal".

I would disconnect the negative terminal of the battery first for safety. As I understand it current only goes through when cranked but better safe than sorry.

The Ignition coil on the 1.6 is located under the ECU, and secured by two bolts which are a bit of a pig - but I managed it :D Hope that helps

It helps if you have a 1/4 drive socket set to get to the top bolt (10mm head). Did mine a couple of days ago and struggled as 3/8 drive extension a bit thick

hi.

just a thought have you changed the rotor arm if it has one .

they are very prone to breaking down and also will cause miss firing especially under load.

hope this helps.

use to fixing forklift trucks lol.
