Octavia near side headlight glass

Featured Replies

The glass has been holed by a stone. Is it possible and how do you change just the glass

in the headlight unit.

is it an early octavia or a later mark 1?

if it is a later one I am sure I have seen a headlight on ebay today if it helps

Mine is a 1999 Octavia 1.9Tdi GLX hatchback. The glass can be bought separately from the dealer together with a new gasket. It looks like the glass is held by several spring clips. It may need the whole headlight assembly removing to get all the clips off. Not sure how to do this as the Haynes manual doesn't cover headlight removal. Does the bumper have to be removed to get at the underside ??

Sorted match marked and removed headlight(4 screw bolts) and indicator lens assembly(1 bolt). Unclipped glass cleaned up rebate and fitted new gasket and glass lens (£27 from Skoda dealer).

Do you need to remove the bumper to get the headlight unit out? I've got to replace the lens in my headlamp after a stone went through it.

Yes and it's it's simple to remove the headlight unit !!!

No need to remove the bumper, we usually remove the right hand one when we do cam belts on the diesels.

Just out of interest mate why is that?

It makes it easier to get at the spring clips on the intake ducting from the intercooler, as that nees to come off so that you can get at the engine mount.

OK thanks  interesting to know.

I´ve changed the glass on the right side and it took me about 10 minutes to do. As said here no need to remove the bumper.

Sorry about lifting old topic. I have ´01 Octavia and right side lamp height motor is silent, either broken or out of electricity. I was thinking of removing the whole lamp unit to see what is wrong with it. Is it just to unscrew four torx screw (two up, two inner side) to get the unit out? Hope, that the cables are lon enough to pull unit out a bit. Or, if You have other ideas to fix motor without pulling out the lamp, I am listening...

The space behind lamp is very limited, since the car has AC installed in Finland which is somehow different as the original one. I guess...

Undo the bolt on top of the indicator and slide the indicator out first, undoing the plug from the back

Then undo the four torx screws holding the headlight in (two are on the radiator side, one on top and one on the other side which was hidden by the indicator), unplug the wire from the back of the headlight unit and slide the unit out.

Getting the levelling motor out and a new one in is a lot more trouble though!

Many thanks for the quick reply!

Managed to get it out (missed first the hidden screw...), but now it got more fun. The motor smells a bit "bad electricity", so it might be at the end of it's life. Tried to muggle with it, but didn't figure out how to get it off without breaking anything. Internet wasn't much help, perhaps I could'n find the exact phrase to search with. Dusk and cold came, so I put it all back together with some electric grease and dust remover to contacts. No help.

I have a possibility (and maybe even some skills...) to use multi meter and 12 V power at work with the motor, so I will carry on with it there after working hours. Maybe even find a warm garage to keep the car.

If I can´t figure out how to disassemble the motor and/or can't find diagram for it, I may leave the whole thing to experts. Wallet cries...

When you are removing the headlight, make sure you have something between the headlight and the bumper. It is a little tight to get it out and you can scratch the top of the bumper if you are not careful.

I tend to replace the sealing rubber between the glass and the rest of the headlight as it is sometimes difficult to get the new glass to sit in the depression in the seal made by the old glass. If you don't get it right, water can get it.

The clips that hold the glass can be difficult to get back on, but firm pressure on the side of the clip will do the trick.

Actually it came out very easily, after I removed the black cover behind the unit. Before that, no chance...

Ok, it seems I need to remove the "glass" to get my hands on the motor. Does it get off easily? Might concider to replace glasses at the same time, since they are a bit worn. Depending on the price, of course.

Edit: Motor EUR 45, Headlamp EUR 89. Wonder, if it includes the motor... Must ask seller tomorrow.

Edit2. Got some useful help on another thread (http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/137504-adjustment-headlight-motor-octavia-1-8t), will continue there. Thanks!
