Question regarding steering on full lock

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Quick question regarding steering on full lock... :)

When you turn the wheel to full lock, what is it that stops it going any further? Is it a restiction within the rack or is it something to do with the strut/ hub assembly?

Reason I ask is that I can replicate the knocking noise I have when I turn the wheel to full lock (I mean full lock - you need to roll the car a little to reach it) and bounce it on and off the full lock point. I'm wondering what's going on at that point.

Thanks,

Chris.

P.S. Changed my ball joints yesterday too....'fairly' straightforward job, and it's made a nice difference to the stability of the car. Feels tighter now at speed and during initial turn in. Well worth it. Parts are £22.50 + vat each from the dealer.

The bottom arm ones. ;)

Got the rack ones (full track arms inc track rod ends) to be fitted on Thursday including a front wheel alignment.

Ar right, Nice that yours were easy  the 3x 13mm bolts holding my drivers side were in so tight the impact gun couldnt break them out and my 46" breaker bar just sheared them

You have had some right troubles with yours mate, i thought mine was bad

Mines a minter at the moment, no rattles, no knocks, runs like a dream :D You wanna swap  I fed up of cleaning the black magic ;)

Well, not THAT easy. :D

The 3x 13mm bolts were easy...the big 18mm nut was a nightmare as it's not easy to get any turn on it and when you're refitting, you need to counter hold the star drive in the ball joint bolt which the CV joint stops you getting to. Not straightforward.

Anyway, does anyone know the answer to the rack question?

Speaking of full lock - when I turn one way, the wheel turns a full one and a half turns from straight, but not quite as far when turned the other way - is that normal?

just been outside poking around on the car, the stoppers are the rack.

Hmm....

I wonder what inside the rack does the stopping. The balljoints on hidden part of the track arms hopefully. :D

If I jack the car up it does not make the noise when bouncing on and off full lock and the only difference there is that the track arms are dangling.
