Adding own POI's in Columbus/MFD3/RNS510 possible?

Featured Replies

Just got my new Octavia with the new navigation system Columbus (or MFD3 / RNS 510 - same thing right?).

Since it got a hard drive I want to add my own POI's like I did on my old TomTom handheld system.

Is this not possible? And if it is - how to do it? And if not - why?

Sorry if this has been clarified in an other thread, then my searching capacities didn't come through...

Thanks for any reply.

I don't think it is possilbe. The POI's are stored initially on the Navigation DVD so are decided by the map company.

Unless you can somehow decode the POI's from the existing DVD. I know some BMW systems have been "hacked" and DVD's reburnt to enable users own POI's. Take a look at the DVD, see if you can see any files that have obvious POI names (hotel, station etc) and see if they can be opened in a text editor. You may be lucky!!

Yes I think that would be the only way.

I know some guys abroad are researching adding a larger HD.

They've got "spare" units to mess about with

Get them to send one to me, I know a thing or two about hard disks (and hacking software) :D

Well, I found the files on the dvd and it is .idx files.

I tried to open it with POIEdit (which is the only poi creating software I know about) and regular text editors, but it didn't support .idx either of them.

But anyway, I think it's would be to difficult to "compile", reburn and reinstall every time let say a speed camera database is updated... So I guess I will settle with the fact that the idea with custom poi databases are not possible on this unit.

VRStu, I don't quite get the point with the bigger HD? At the POI point of interest as to say.. :) ?

But of course, it is always need for bigger disks!

I don't think they have spare units, quite the opposite, they are hard to come by.

The guy just wanted to experiment I think. They've obviously identified the unit and I think there is someone with a larger HD already installed.

The big HD comment was merely a passing cooment and not related to the POI question.

HD info taken from the info I've read -

Hitachi Endurastar J4K50. These have an operating temp range of -30C to +85C and an altitude range of -300m to 5000m, plus shock sensors and thermal fly-height control.
