Home made gasket

Featured Replies

Anyone else here made their own gasket?

I don't know how I did it but I got the wrong throttle body gasket delivered to my house and I only realised once I had opened it all up.

So I just drew round the old one on an old bit of card out of a Ginsters packet.

Is this bad? Anyone done this and mucked up the engine or had good success?

I think the Ginsters packet will biodegrade and turn to nothing. You should be able to get the correct gasket from a Skoda Dealer cheaply.

Or you can buy gasket material that you can cut your own gaskets from or use those liquid gasket things. I personally would go for the proper bonefide one though :)

Get Ginsters in!!

I would just leave it and see how you get on

Thats a bit of a bodge isn't it!? A second hand one would be better surely! I think it does get quite warm, so becareful when using cardboard, as it might be a fire hazard!

Home-made gaskets are fine. On older engines I've heard of people getting by with a home-made head gasket, maybe not for long but for a few hundred miles (for that job you use varnished cardboard). The best cardboard I know for most jobs is in a Weetabix packet, it's just the right consistency. To be sure, put some Hermetite on both sides (red for anything in contact with water, gold or blue for almost anything else. About the only job where I would have really serious doubts about its ability to stand up to the punishment would be either end of an exhaust manifold. Oh, and of course it's useless for stuff like rocker covers and sumps, where you need thick cork, but then those can be patched.

I don't think the Inlet Manifold gets hot so it should be ok in that respect.

I gave it a quick spray of water proofer so it doesn't get soggy and therefore turn to mush.
